Why Do Natives Have Such Strange Ideas on Difficulty? - Ryuujin27 - 2011-02-18 Japanese people will always be surprised when you do anything in Japanese. Still to this day, all my 3+ year long Japanese friends, excluding 2 (which leaves over 30), will be very surprised when I display any knowledge further than greeting and simple conversation. It's strange, but expected at this point. However, at the point I am now, I've actually encountered more new Japanese acquaintences are more surprised at my English abilities. For example, I was out to dinner a few weeks ago with all Japanese. Most of them I never met before. Naturally, I greeted them in Japanese, talked with them in Japanese, etc. No English was used whatsoever. However, we are in New York and we were at a normal Italian restauraunt, so when the waiter came along, I took the lead and did the normal small talk thing, asked for the wine list, inquired about the specials, etc. When he left, the first thing that two of the girls said was, "英語上手ですね!” with sincerely surprised expressions on their faces. Of course, I naturally replied, "当たり前だろう?アメリカ人だから。” Which got the laugh and successfully broke the ice with those two. That was the 4th time I've received the same compliment. Either Japanese people are getting weirder, or I have some of dat der real good-like English. In the middle of words roman characters are used for those kanji or kana not yet covered. Which is stupid because the whole dialogue is covered in romaji and English as well.Is that for real?! :o That's hideous~ 笑
