Hi Guys,
I buy a lot of used dvds at tsutaya that are japanese. I want to make mkv movie files from these dvds with Japanese Subtitles. Does anyone know a way to do this? Im willing to buy software.

Some users on forums said that handbreak doesnt copy 1) Menus 2) Subtitles... Can you confirm this for me? Will it work on Japanese dvds with Japanese subtitles?

Menus I don't know as I've never tried but you can choose to include multiple subtitles and audio tracks. I usually make mkvs with Japanese and English audio and subtitles. You can then choose which one you want in vlc.
This is with the data from Japanese dvds, not adding subtitles from some other source.

Handbrake does copy subtitles (soft and hard) but AFAIK it doesn't copy menus... Do mkv files even support menus?
If you go with handbrake you also have to download and install VLC (which everybody with a computer should do anyway) as it is what handbrake uses to access encrypted DVDs. (It's free and open source)

Just the Regular > Normal Setting. Apple TV setting will record a .mp4 instead of .mkv
And make sure MKV is selected under Format

vid codec: MPEG-4 (i think)
2 pass encoding
quality - average bit rate 1500
video is decent and not too large. also i remem one setting I used at the beginning took like 2.5 hours for a movie, this setting is about 30-45 mins
(i may have choose the wrong codec as I haven't used the prog in a while :$)
