DingLabs Desktop Player for Listening-Reading - Axlen - 2011-02-09 I'm just posting this for those that may be interested. I have not tried this out yet. This is an offline tool for reading along with audio-books. This one in particular has support for dual transcripts. http://blog.dinglabs.com/2011/02/announcing-dinglabs-desktop-player-for.html DingLabs Desktop Player for Listening-Reading - nest0r - 2011-02-09 Traitor! I don't see you supporting balloonguy's tool like this! ;p In all seriousness, thanks for sharing, I didn't notice this update. Perhaps that person saw our (my?) complaints about it being online-only. I like the dual transcript function, though the reason I didn't mention it further (I believe I mentioned to sheetz in the audiobook thread I'd like it if we could add the English translation to balloonguy's tool in a way similar to Google Translate's pop-ups of the original text, but in reverse) was because it could be a pain to time both Japanese and English texts. (Edit: Actually I harped on about it a cpl times, heh, so n/m.) I still would prefer the overlapping arrangement I previously suggested, I think the parallel thing is not a good setup. So it's not Listening-Reading, it's interactive audiobook/controlled shadowing! L-R is some terrible strategy people shouldn't use. ^_- At any rate, it's still got nothing on balloonguy's tool, Kage Shibari, yet! Doesn't support as many formats (.srt, .ass, .lrc, .ogg, etc.) or use browser extensions and stuff (like ruby, Rikaichan, dropbox sharing, etc.). But it's nice and of course it's not *really* a competition, I'm glad this idea is continuing to be developed. I googled for "dinglabs desktop player" and this thread was the first result! I'm actually the creator of dinglabs.com. Good to see some other fans of Transcriber are out there! I'm excited now that I've got some code that can run on the desktop. I think it could serve as a platform for a lot of other functionality... Like utilities to convert .trs files to other formats (like LRC), manage groups of TRS files, maybe convert audio, who knows? I'd love to hear your ideas. Let me know if you encounter any bugs or have any suggestions. @nest0r: regarding kanji popups.. One of the reasons I targeted the browser platform was so I could get a lot of orthogonal functionality for free, such as dictionary popups and the like... At least for Chinese, there are lots of pop-up dictionary browser plugins, and I assume most other languages are taken care of. I haven't looked into ruby before, though. Is that something that's not working right now? DingLabs Desktop Player for Listening-Reading - nest0r - 2011-02-10 And furthermore, Ding Laboratories is a wicked, massively—oh hi slattery! Thanks for creating your tool in the first place and your write-up about Transcriber. It was exactly what I was looking for at the time and gave us plenty of ideas (though sadly the interactive audiobook thing hasn't taken off in terms of creating materials). I never used your online tool because I got the impression that I had to upload materials to read them with your tool? Which is why I asked balloonguy who provided something both local and remote. Now that I look at the Desktop Player, I see that it also uses the browser? If so, I suppose my concerns about extensions and customizability are moot. When I first read the description, I saw the mp3-only bit and something about downloading a Java program and I suppose I imagined some standalone with a special format or somesuch. A conversion tool would be a lovely addition. I recall troubling other forum members in the past about the ability to convert .trs files so that they could be used in subs2srs to make cards. I also really think an arrangement of the translation other than parallel to the original would be good. I am likely in the minority since many seem satisfied with parallel texts, but in my mind that's only because the original methods were devised without tools that could allow other means of presenting translations, such as through pop-ups (e.g. Google Translate allows you to see the original text with a mouseover, I think being able to view the translated text in the same way would be great, though perhaps triggered by something else in order to prevent conflicts with Rikaichan). Edit: Oh, I see that d hotkey for Google, perhaps that could be modified so it brings up the line from the English transcript instead? At any rate, now I seem to be faced with two programs with identical functionalities to use with a still nascent learning method that needs to be promoted. What am I to do? ^_^ Guess now I have to recommend both. Sigh. So much work. Everyone needs to stop coming up with great tools for us learners. Edit 3: The ‘files of type’ dialogue has MP3/OGG, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't play .ogg, so. I initially noted that this program doesn't support as many formats are balloonguy's tool, but I'm getting the feeling you're going for something specific by keeping the formats narrow? Or is it already on the to-do list. Edit: Ohhh, thought of something good for either tool: Bookmarks! Perhaps some kind of combination with cb4960's JNovel Formatter, which turns full stops (。) into bookmark points. DingLabs Desktop Player for Listening-Reading - nest0r - 2011-02-11 Also, how do I remove the Google Analytics stuff that is generated in the Launched file or customize the .html file? I'm a n00b so when I extracted the .jar all that stuff is confusing to me. Is this program entirely offline? Also, it might be good to have options to customize which browser opens, and also the dialogue always opens in Documents, could be good to have them open in the last open folder (like if you select the .mp3, when you go to open the .trs it's in that same folder). You even said “like this one?” and I complimented the function that it: “has multiple translations that pop-up.” I probably got the idea from there rather than Google Translate. Thanks by the way. That translation seems a bit lengthy, though. I prefer Google's shorter segments (or in this case it could be based around wherever the timestamps were placed, along with the highlights). Also, with Kage Shibari there's plenty of room for toying with customizing how the peripheral white space is used... DingLabs Desktop Player for Listening-Reading - slattery - 2011-02-11 hey @nest0r, that was one feature I was experimenting with: you should be able to hit 'd' and see a primitive Google Translate popup of the highlighted segment (left transcript only, and it only translates into English).. Let me know if that works at all. Thanks for the ideas. |
