kana keyboard input - droog - 2007-08-19
I'm using archlinux and was wondering if any other linux users have set up their keyboards for kana input, if so how did you do it. I'm checking out scim-anthy and will probably install it tonight, its a romaji -> kana -> kanji converter, any easier way?
What are you guys using on windows to do this? I'm getting sick of copying and pasting and think it would help with learning to be able to type the romaji and output the kana.

Windows users I would assume are all using the Microsoft IME to switch between English-Japanese? Just a simple Alt+Shift
I have Xubuntu on an older machine and couldn't find any way to type Japanese

I did have some problems in configuring it at first, though. Rebooting (for no obvious reason) solved some of them. Also, under Debian, the order of installing packages is very important. It was scim (and its dependencies), then skim, then scim-anthy and any other you want to install. It's now very practical for my Japanese self-learning...

I think scim-anthy has an option for kana input; just select the input mode in the setup.

I'm using skim and friends, and have it set up so that I can cycle the input modes through Anthy (kana->kanji conversion), hiragana only, and katakana only. Works well - the only thing I had to change was the hotkey to activate it, since at first I kept accidentally hitting it while typing English text.
Laurent, I think that installation order bug is fixed now. I do remember encountering it as well some time ago, but didn't see it the last time I set up a new machine.

いただきます first word typed in hiragana! I finaly installed scim-anthy and in 5 minutes got it working, I wasn't expecting it to be that easy.
