Sticky notes all over your house? (Real life, physical, SRSing?) - foodcubes - 2011-02-05

Hey guys, so I just had an idea. Has any thought of, or tried, putting sticky notes in Japanese all over their homes? Like labeling items in Japanese? For example, labeling your milk carton with "牛乳", sink with "流し", television with "テレビ". This could also be done with sentences too, like putting the phrase, "何か食べ物をもらってもいいですか。" on your fridge. (I know you can make better phrases than that, but It's just an example of the concept.) Whether you take the time to read the note or just take it in subliminally, it seems like you will create a really solid association of the Japanese word associated with the object using this technique.

Of course this is more for beginners such as myself. Unless you can think of advanced phrases to add to physical objects or locations.

In the future, maybe they can hook your stereo up for this, where it will automatically speak a phrase in Japanese when you open the fridge, turn on the TV, or run the bath.

What do you guys think?

Here's the result of a forum search. Seems some have tried it but it didn't last long. Probably be better off with pictures + SRS cards.

I think it'd be interesting to have an augmented reality sticky note app using iDevice cameras.

Edit: As for AR, maybe this'd work: Sekai Camera

Learn Japanese in 10 minutes a day

I saw this book YEARS ago at a local bookstore and it included stickers in the back for this VERY reason.

Of course the effort it takes to go label a bunch of stuff in your house, and the ability for them to get rubbed/washed/whatever off, you'd be better off just throwing the facts into anki and srsing for a couple minutes a day for a week and you should have most of the items memorized without labeling a bunch of times and perhaps looking a bit silly, and taking the extra time it would take to do so ^_^

It sounds like a good idea. Go ahead and try it. If it doesn't work or you can't maintain it, so what? You'll have learned something in a different way than reading books, sitting in front of the computer, or glued to the TV.

As for me, I never went that far, but I did cover my walls and ceilings in notes and vocab lists. I remember I even used to shower with the door open with a new vocab list pinned to the wall outside. Anything you can do that's a bit different will help things stick. The world doesn't need to begin and end with SRSing.

Yeah, I think your probably better off with the photos + SRS cards idea. Better yet, make it photos from around your house, so you still have some personal attachment to it. But again, that sounds like a lot of work.

I did this for a couple of things in my house (like: 絵、写真、居間、浴室、寝室、テレビ、壁), kanji + hiragana.
At first, it helped me remember the kanji, and then it helped me learn 3-4 new vocabulary words I didn't know before and then it helped me to notice that 寝 can be read "シン" ... I guess that's about everything I learned. Now I don't actually see the sticky notes anymore. I don't know if it helped much, but it doesn't hurt either. My mother (who is trying to learn japanese herself) always tries to read the notes and asks "oh, よくしつ means what?". Heh. Guess sticking the things into Anki achieves the same and you don't have notes everywhere, but then... it somehow makes you look determined. Wink

Wow, I should have guessed this has been thought of... numerous times. Yes, I tried it and it is time consuming. I might continue to play around with it though, just as an attempt to Japanify my life a little more because right now I'm totally failing at AJATT. As Khatz would say, I need Japanese words and sounds entering my eyes and ears on a frequent basis. Something I'm not doing.

I'm thinking that I need to move on to some sort of portable Anki that I can use all day. Plus, something with audio and video too. I'm thinking subs2srs will be the way...

By the way, here's another alternative (or at least, something in a similar vein) I considered in the past: flickr annotations/picture dictionary for RevTKers?

That's for the micro level. For the macro, there's always: Collaborative Map of Japan for RevTKers? (Well, Japan in that case.)

The variations I'm thinking of in this context being pictures of your home (using flickr privacy settings) and/or tagged maps of areas around you that may be on Google...

And I'm guessing you could do the same with videos.
