Yeah, word wrap existed since the first release. As far as new releases go, nothing new yet. I'm trying to do releases which add new stuff which can be grouped into some sort of coherent unit. Or fix really broken stuff (like that utf-16 parsing bug in the first release on Windows).

If you are of the adventurous persuasion you can sync to the bleeding edge by syncing to the mercurial repository at https://code.google.com/p/yomichan/ . That way you can get new features early, but stuff might be broken. Although not too broken since I always use the latest code for my own studying Big Grin

Edit: And yeah, keep posting suggestions and bugs!

yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - cangy - 2011-02-02

some feature suggestions for further anki integration and to save on manual lookups:

parse the document in to sentences, words, kanji

find all the words in the currently displayed page
look them up in the vocab decks
if they're not in the decks highlight in the text and show them with the dictionary lookup on the side, with options to add as new cards
if they're in a deck but not active highlight differently in the text and show them with the card info on the side, with options to make due, unsuspend or tag
add the sentence to the vocab cards, and again as cloze delete

similar to above but for kanji

option to fail active card if you have to look up the meaning manually

I really think furigana support should be in the next big milestone. More than anything seeing stuff like 計画 <<けいかく>> in a document, especially when they apply only to the first character of a more complex word like 振 <<ふ>> り込む is a detriment to reading since you spend a lot of time just trying to parse what is text and what should be furigana.

yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - FooSoft - 2011-02-03

@cangy
I've been thinking about that kind of integration for a while already, definitely on the list of stuff to do Big Grin

@FutureBlues
Yeah, furigana getting in the way like that is annoying. Short term I'm going to do a basic thing to hide it from the text, long term is support rendering it properly. Along with vertical text, proper implementation will require a custom text renderer which before doing I want to pick some more low hanging fruit.

yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - Womacks23 - 2011-02-03

Can you make this compatible with Chinese?

Using CEDICT, HanDeDict or CFDICT.

yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - FooSoft - 2011-02-04

Yeah, I'm planning to add Chinese support. It will come after I feel like Japanese support is good enough. Since I don't know anything about Chinese I will probably need some help in getting stuff set up too.

Not sure if someone mentioned this already, but adding a tag function would help streamline things a bit—especially as the audio download plugin and extension require a certain tag.

The ability to leave highlights in the text would be nice.

yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - FooSoft - 2011-02-07

What do you mean highlights? Like highlighting the vocab item within the sentence that contains it?

yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - Womacks23 - 2011-02-07

I mean in the large text file. Books are big and take weeks to read. I'd like to use yomichan as my primary mode of reading and leave some highlights behind as I go through a file.

Great job!

The things I ran into up until now:

[figured out the first one, stupid mistake by me^^]

The other thing is, when I try to copy a fact, I get the following error message:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "C:\Users\rigol\AppData\Roaming\.anki\plugins\yomichan_plugin\core\reader.py", line 260, in onDefinitionsAnchorClicked
self.copyDefinitions([definition])
File "C:\Users\rigol\AppData\Roaming\.anki\plugins\yomichan_plugin\core\reader.py", line 452, in copyDefinitions
for entry, reasons, word in definitions:
TypeError: iteration over non-sequence

For longer texts like books a simple bookmarking function would be great, too Smile

I'm getting a "500 server error" on that link to yomichan. Any clue about that? Just try later?

Thanks in advance.

Charley

@rigol
Doh! I didn't think that bug was in a published version of yomichan :\ Anyway, I fixed it like a week ago, so it will be fixed soon.

@CharleyGarrett
I just tried, seems to work OK

yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - CharleyGarrett - 2011-02-10

I googled the word yomichan, and found a link without https, and saw the 7z and gz files, and a link there that said "show all". That show all also gave the 500 server error. But I was able to download the file and install the files without going to the /list part of that link. I haven't tried it again since then. I suppose it could merely be intermittent.

I'm going to see how this works with drama subs. Might be interesting to see how quickly I can use them to add to deck.

Feature request: A button that highlights any Kanji or kana item not in your deck, so you can move through a script faster.

yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - Cranks - 2011-02-11

Is there a hot key for adding?

yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - nest0r - 2011-02-11

Another trifling recommendation is to add a tooltip whatchamacallit over the buttons for adding cards. I keep forgetting which is which. The tiny plus, big one, etc. ;p (Yeah I know the size should be an indicator but in those little instants I get neurotic.)

By the way, first person who comes up with a way to add Anki cards from other readers (or browser) will surely be given riches beyond their wildest dreams.

yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - Cranks - 2011-02-13

Excellent tool. It's really helped me mine anime, drama, news and music subs/transcripts/lyrics. I'm loving it.

What I would love to see is a tag feature at the bottom of the UI. You can change the tag from a drop down list or fill it in. Also, when an item is added it shows up in a side box on the left or right of the app, so it can be edited after adding (this is a good idea as Edict throws out a lot of different meanings; hence, you can delete unnecessary stuff while still understanding the context as you go.)

yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - Cranks - 2011-02-13

Another good feature might be to be able to highlight a sentence and in the side box have all the possible options displayed, so you can quickly rip through a sentence.

yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - nest0r - 2011-02-13

@Cranks - You mean what the programmer-gods have been calling ‘sentence glossing’? So in a sense it would work the way Translation Aggregator does (autoscans text from the clipboard, pastes and polls the WWWJDIC server and outputs the results (words + definitions) to a pane in TA. Since thanks to cangy and overture those functions are already in Anki, I could see some integration of that with yomichan. (Just speculating, hehe. I'm also hoping for some cool stuff with offline glossing with another tool cb4960's working on, but even programmer-gods must surely rest?)

A preview for the cards that's added as you mentioned below could be interesting, though the user already selects the edict definition being used and to what extent, by clicking that add button, so in a sense you can already see all that stuff and then tweak things (using the tags, if you've selected them to match the JDIC plugin, to generate audio with thurd's plugin, for example).

I just wanted to say I love you Foosoft. *manhug* lol
thanks again. I use this addon everyday

yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - FooSoft - 2011-02-13

Thanks for the feedback guys! The new version is coming along. The next version is going to be up on Anki shared plugins so I'm trying to make things spiffy for that. And yes, tagging and easily accessing added cards are some of those things Smile

yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - Cranks - 2011-02-14

Interesting point, Nestor. Actually another thing that I could see being useful is the ability to highlight words in the edict output in the definitions field of Yomichan and have only those definitions added to the flashcard (perhaps everything else can be auto-deleted somehow). This would mean that you would only have the definition that you see in the text. Also, something that could add the sentence the word comes in would also be handy as a contextual tool.

Also, a floating add button underneath the text you highlight (perhaps activated on shift+middle mouse button). With this you could look at the definition in the definition pane and if the top most is correct, add right away!

I have to agree about Translation Aggregator integration of some sort. That is quite an impressive tool and if something like that were manageable, in terms of a similar output (perhaps just a Google sentence translation and WWWJDIC gloss, I think this would be an all-in-one tool for creating whole decks in minimal time.)

Lol, aren't we language learners so greedy!

Edit: HO HO!!! I've just found an interesting work around. Post your text to Translation Aggregator (500 char limit) then cut and paste to a text file. Save and open with Yomichan. Now all of your vocabulary is lined up nicely underneath your sentence. You can now just scroll down and quickly add anything. Now to find a way to set it up, so there are no repetitions of words. Ah the magic of software tools.

This is an excellent tool!! (Way better than reading text in Firefox with rikaichan)

Hey FooSoft, thank you so much for the great work.
I've just tried Yomichan on an Aozora Bunko novel and it works like a charm.
It's a fantastic tool for mining vocabulary! Can't wait to try out the future features...
