First, I want to thank the author, because this little anki plugin helped me through 3 years of my studies (japanese as a major) and get scholarship. I'm actually siiting in my room in Japan preparing for test Smile.
Thank you very much Big Grin

And there is also a question. Will there be an chinese version of yomichan? There is this "pera pera" plugin for chinese and looks and works almost exactly like rikaikun. Maybe it's not so time-consuming to modify yomichan to chinese texts too Smile

I just can't get yomichan to work for me at all. I save my file in a txt. format but when I load it there are bunch of weird characters, questions marks or more than half the text is missing and the formatting is messed up. What am I doing wrong? What do I need to do to get this to work? I am using a MacBook Pro running mavericks.

yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - Errol246 - 2014-02-28

Ok, I think I may have solved this one on my own. I looked through the menus searching for some solution. Under "view" I stumbled upon something called "word wrap". Not knowing what it was I pressed it anyway just to see what might happen, and low and behold, all the text suddenly appeared! I have no idea why, but using a "word wrap" is apparently the solution. I hope somebody else with the same problem as me sees this!

Version bump, adding some stuff that has been sitting around in git repo for a while as well as some bug fixes. The main thing in this release is being able to add words with hotkeys and being able to go back and fourth in text document using bracket keys.

Going to Japan in two weeks so a little busy with stuff, but will add more stuff after things settle down Smile

Hi FooSoft, thank you for continuing support and development for this. I am just starting out but would like to see an option to highlight the word inside the sentence. Right now, the {sentence} variable only pastes in the entire sentence without highlighting the word itself.

If it's too much of a hassle I could program it in myself though I'd have to read up as my Python has grown rather rusty...

yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - carcinogenic_dandruff - 2014-05-04

Hello FooSoft.

Is it possible for you (or anybody else) to make yomichan work for other languages?

Or making it possible to choose different kinds of dictionaries formats, such as Stardict to study other languages instead of the commonly used EPwing format for studying japanese?

yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - Helena4 - 2014-10-12

I agree. I would really love to be able to use this for French, which I am doing for A-level, and we are required to read and speak about news stories. That would be much easier if I could read them in something like yomichan and create instant flashcards to learn the words with.

Anyway, at the moment I'm really happy with how I'm using it for Japanese:

1) Watch a Japanese drama without english subs
2)Retrieve the transcript from the drama note website
3)Go through the transcript in yomichan, making flashcards from all unkown vocab.
4)Learn all the vocab
5)Listen to the drama's audio to distract myself on the 1 hour bus journey to school and reinforce what I've learnt
6)Watch the next episode and hopefully understand more... then repeat cycle.

I haven't completed a full cycle of this yet, but hopefully, it will work out well. There's a lot of vocab I don't know just from this first long episode though!

I've been using the Yomichan addon for years! However I recently reformatted my laptop and had to reinstall everything. Yesterday I tried reinstalling Anki and Yomichan. I also grabbed my Japanese fonts from my backup hard drive. However, in the Yomichan reader, it will not let me use these fonts and I get this error:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "C:\Users\******\Documents\Anki\addons\yomi_base\preferences.py", line 178, in onFontFamilyChanged
self.preferences['fontFamily'] = str(font.family())
UnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec can't encode characters in position 0-1: ordinal not in range(128)

It's not always "0-1", sometimes it's "0-5" or a different number.

For example I have a bunch of Japanese Epson fonts (EPSON 太丸ゴシック体Bfor example). Basically none of the Japanese fonts I installed work. Could it be a problem with my system? I haven't encountered this issue anywhere else....

Maybe I have to re-download the fonts, instead of pulling them off my external hard drive?

If anybody could answer this I would be super grateful! I lurked through the entire thread and didn't see anything similar... and thank you so much for the awesome addon!

Edit:
I am starting to suspect this might be a bug in the addon itself-- I tried running Anki + Yomichan on a different computer and I had the same font issues as well.

THEN I dusted off my old XP and got an older version of Anki + Yomichan off there, and I am no longer having issues getting these certain fonts to work.

So I really do think that it's a problem with a recent update to either Anki or Yomichan, and not just my computer. It's just a hunch and I could be wrong, but it seems to be the logical conclusion.

Hey everyone, added a couple of new features/improvements (there were actually two releases within days of each other, but didn't post anything about it here yet).

* You can now import terms from word lists and the Kindle vocabulary builder database. Check out http://foosoft.net/posts/2014-12-24/index.html for more info.
* Yomichan now searches enamdict in addtion to edict. Should make looking up names a lot easier. This basically doubled the dictionary database file size, so in case you guys wanted to know what was up with that, lol.

Enjoy!

(please rate this extension on https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/934748696 if you like it)

I really do want a J-J dictionary for this. Becuase I've found a great way to use it, but I really won't be able to continue using it if I can't switch to J-J, because that switch to J-J is fundamental to my learning plan. And having to give this add-on up would really ruin my sentence/vocab mining. Please, has anyone found a way to replace the dictionary with a J-J one?

Also, I think it would be useful to be able to create several cards from one sentence. My deck is set up to have sentence and target word on the front, with the reading and meaning of the word on the back. But sometimes I have more than 1 unknown word in a sentence, and yomichan won't let me make multiple cards from that sentence.

yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - FooSoft - 2015-02-14

I can add a J-J dictionary myself if somebody tells me what a good, free dictionary I can use.

yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - Helena4 - 2015-02-15

That sounds great. I created a new thread to search for such a dictionary http://forum.koohii.com/showthread.php?pid=162277#pid162277 and so far I got a reply about 日本語Wordnet http://wordnetepwing.sourceforge.jp/ it's free but it's translated from the English version of Wordnet, so probably isn't as good as comercial dictionaries. But there's an option.

P.S. I really appreciate the addition of name lookup btw. Names were just big chunks of text I couldn't read before. Thanks.

yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - Helena4 - 2015-02-16

I think the best solution is if EPWING support could be added, so people could add their own purchased EPWING dictionaries into yomichan. I would purchase a J-J EPWING dictionary if I could use it with yomichan. Heck, I would pay you too to add that feature. That solves the problem of looking for mediocre free alternatives, when there isn't really anything J-J like EDICT out there. It would also be useful to anyone who wants a J-E improvement on EDICT.

(Epwing2Anki really doesn't work for me. I can't be making vocab lists for everything. I like how yomicahn takes the work out of card making)

yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - zebracoupe - 2015-05-01

I just wanted to say thank you. This tool is so great. It has completely changed my card-making system, and made reading so much more pleasurable. спасибо!

yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - jcdietz03 - 2015-08-14

I was using this to start reading a light novel last night and it was really great. Thanks for making this.

The hotkeys didn't work for me; I use the current version of Anki and Windows 8.

RE: yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - heytherefriend - 2015-12-22

I'm also interested in a J-J version of Yomichan. Have any developments been made in that direction since the beginning of the year? I'd be willing to pay for a dictionary/dev work if necessary.

Thank you for yomichan, it helps a lot with my learning!

RE: yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - polyturn - 2016-04-07

One of the few programs with Anki-integration, great program!

I have a feature request though.
Is it possible to unsuspend and/or reposition already existing cards using yomichan?, i.e., the Vocabulary glosses are usually already existing in my decks (coreplus) and I think it might be more efficient to simply reposition them.

Thanks.

RE: yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - rainmaninjapan - 2016-04-12

I'm not sure what you're asking, but I think what you want is able to be done with morphman.

RE: yomichan: a tool for reading books with Anki vocab deck integration - polyturn - 2016-04-12

I already have MM in Anki.
I'm not sure but I think by default, Yomichan's behavior is to add cards to the end of the queue however, most of those vocabulary cards are already existing in my 25k+ vocab deck. I'm wondering if it's possible for Yomichan to simply reposition those already existing cards (preferrable to the start of the queue).
---
I'm not sure I understand Yomichan yet but I've been doing a bit of research and it's been bugging me that I can't recreate what's described here (https://dayjaby.wordpress.com/2015/06/19/learning-texts-in-anki-instead-of-boring-cards , https://dayjaby.wordpress.com/2016/03/22/repeated-intensive-reading/ , https://dayjaby.wordpress.com/2015/10/27/yomichan-basic-functions/).
I'm using the latest version of Yomichan and some of the features described in the links are missing.

For example, the feature (I think) I'm looking for 'Put new/overwritten cards into the learning queue' button is missing.
(SC of button: https://dayjaby.files.wordpress.com/2015/06/yomipreferences.png?w=730)

I also don't have the Remove vocab, learn vocab, move vocab buttons
(SC of buttons: https://dayjaby.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/summary.png?w=730)

Also, I tried placing .txt files into the collection.media/Yomichan folder but it won't automatically create subdecks as described...
Were these removed in the newer version?

------
Did some more searching and I think I found what I was looking for (https://github.com/FooSoft/yomichan/pull/9).
Where's the blue button though?
-----
Final Edit:
Nvm, just realized I was looking at a different version of Yomichan (https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/907186589).

Some time ago I installed Windows 10 (instead of windows 7) on my pC, now for the first time I tried to launch yomichan and received the following error while trying to see a word definition:

File "C:\Users\Andrey\Documents\Anki\addons\yomi_base\reader_util.py", line 89, in formatFields
   result[field] = value.format(**markup)
ValueError: unmatched '{' in format

I'd post in on GitHub, but it sees that this thread is more alive Smile Could you help, please?

UPD: My mistake. In settings in one place I used ")" instead of "}". Now it works.

I hang out with dayjaby who forked your original with the SRS Reading branch, and have been saying we should do something like this. This looks fantastic, can't wait to use it.

Can you make the hotkey editable? Touch screen devices can't use it. Maybe make an auto always on hover option too like rikaikun?

Maybe consider integrating phonetic components on the kanji frames as well?
