Anyone know any Unique kanji counters? - jettyke - 2011-01-17

Are there any places online where I can copy-paste like a whole book and it will count the unique kanji?

Or maybe something that counts frequency...

If it's not online it's also okay I think.

I'm going to peddle this app: http://www.physics.ucla.edu/~grosenth/jwpce.html
JWPce is kind of old and no longer updated. Its original use was as a word processor but its strongest features are its dictionaries and various kanji look ups. You can swap in a new EDICT from Breen's FTP to get the latest entries and the program will read it fine.

For counting, copy into the main window. Kanji -> Count Kanji -> Count. Most of the info should be self explanatory. There are a lot of features so you'll need to read the help file to really figure some of them out.

Damn, It shows question marks on some texts :S
And doesn't count...

And crashes.

I found a way to deal with the problem:

copy any text to notepad, and copy paste the same notepad text to the program, this way it works.

Why I needed this program is because it's probably a very good way to rate the difficulty level of books.

Actually I'm gonna put the kanji count in the beginning of the name of each book I have on my computer, so they will be sorted by the estimated difficulty level.

I have never quite figured the question mark thing, and I'm convinced crashes occur because of certain entries in EDICT. There are particular searches I can make that will without fail cause it to crash every time. I believe the question mark thing may have to do with the way fonts work in the program and the fact that either a) JWPce isn't doing a proper job at decoding the charset or b) The character it needs doesn't exist in the font.

Even that aside, I still keep it around for using SKIP code look ups and fast dictionary look ups that don't care if the word is still conjugated and let me specify where in the word I'm looking "begins with" "ends with" sort of thing.

The program really is somewhat overdue for a rewrite, but I think the guy that made it either retired some years ago or maybe he died. UCLA is simply keeping the JWPce stuff up as a courtesy at this point I think.
