Windows (7) dictionary apps - thermal - 2011-01-10

Hi,

I have previously used a mac when studying Japanese which contains an awesome j-j and j-e dictionary.

Is there something sexy like this for windows? Or do you need to use epwing?

Lingoes is pretty good, I have 明鏡 and 新明解 on mine, Stardict seems to be pretty popular, but I haven't found decent dictionaries for it, the most Mac-like stand-alone dictionary software you're going to find is probably Kenkyusha's New College Dictionary but for sheer portability I always recommend EPWING readers.

Never heard of Lingoes, but those two are for Stardict too. Genius and Edict are great in Stardict also.

Edit: Looks like Lingoes is browser only? No wonder I never heard of it. ;p

Lingoes is downloadable software, like Stardict.

Is it like Stardict or is it browser-only? All the screenshots show it only being used in the browser.

By the way after adding 200000 dictionaries to Stardict I was unsatisfied with the pop-up definition speed, then noticed I had somehow forgotten to disable network dictionaries. Much faster now (since it had been lagging as it contacted and loaded online dictionaries).

It's like Stardict. It also has a Rikaichan-like functionality which can be used inside browsers...the software has a sort of browser-like look to it too I guess.

How do I get stuff to pop-up definitions in a floating window like Stardict and Rikaichan when I'm using Lingoes? I only see the option to bring up a search window.

For instance, I'm in UltraEdit, and I want to compare Lingoes' pop-up to Stardict's. I put the mouse cursor over the text in Ultraedit and... nothing happens in Lingoes, but the definition pops up in Stardict.

Is it possible that when I said 'browser only' vs. 'like Stardict' we had our wires crossed? I mean a pop-up in a floating window based on where the cursor is over text, but not just in the browser, in any program, unlike Rikaichan which only does this in browsers.

Or maybe we meant the same thing and I'm missing the option in Lingoes. It looks very similar to Stardict except without floating window/pop-up options, which is throwing me off.

Go under Configuration > Text Capture, it should have right mouse button + ctrl as the text capture keys by default, change them if you like. Also go to Dictionaries > Text Capture Group to make sure there are the dictionaries you want there. To use text capture, select the word and then press right mouse button + ctrl (or whatever the text capture keys are set to). It doesn't have the popup window come up automatically like Rikaichan, but I prefer that, since it's less easy to get lazy and have it translate every word. For some reason the Rikaichan-like function works in some programs (Firefox, Komodo Edit, EBwin, etc) but not in others (Open Office), but I could never get that function to work in Stardict at all so I'm happy with it.

Thanks for the Lingoes-formatted links. So text capture w/ a Rikaichan-like pop-up definition does work outside of Firefox, like Stardict (depending on the program)?

I'll check it out and see if that works how I want/changes the workflow to something I prefer. I also only use Stardict's pop-ups outside the browser for specific, infrequent words (via clipboard scanning hotkey).

Yeah, pretty much any program where you can select a word it should work on (Openoffice is the only major program I've tried which it didn't work with). I hope it works for you now.^^

Thanks guys.

Looks like Kenkyusha's New College Dictionary doesn't have a j-j dictionary which is mainly what I want.

I will try lingoes and stardict.

Shin Meikai is J-J, but yes, I think you should try as many dictionary programs as you can to figure out which works best for you.

Ok, Lingoes is not bad. Enter in words and the definitions appear. You can see the index on the left which is nice. There is no click through on words in the definition, so drilling down on words you don't know is a bit troublesome. Also the back and forward buttons only work when doing a search, but it keeps pulling you back to the browse/index section. This also seems a bit broken. Searching for some words brings up results in search but not in browse.

Does StarDict have any j-j dictionaries? Can only see j-e ones on the site.

Windows (7) dictionary apps - thermal - 2011-01-12

Also, what is a good epwing reader for windows?

Yeah but you have to grab them via the TPB torrent, methinks (just look for Babylon dictionaries for Stardict or something). They used to be on SourceForge but were removed.

I quite like Lingoes. For the automatic pop-up to work you just uncheck the ctrl/alt/shift boxes and set it to 'mouse over'. I think I might use Lingoes now because it has a few more options for the pop-ups, plus I like that you can use mouse w/ hotkeys for text capture. Using ALT+Right Mouse Click at the moment.

I guess StarDict is still best for Open Office and anything else Lingoes doesn't work for, since you can do clipboard scanning w/ hotkey to get the pop-up. Lingoes has clipboard scanning also but it seems to be automatic rather than toggled w/ hotkey?

Edit: Nevermind, clipboard scanning hotkey's in... 'Hotkeys' tab. ;p Default is Alt + B. So Lingoes works in OpenOffice Writer in that sense, same as Stardict (you'd have to copy it then hit hotkey).

Windows (7) dictionary apps - nest0r - 2011-01-12

BTW thermal, you can use the text capture function on pop-ups (and on the new pop-up, etc.), so there's a form of 'drilling' in that sense.

Ex: I can alt+right-click on a word in my text editor, which brings up a pop-up definition, and then alt+right-click on a word in that pop-up definition, which brings up the pop-up definition for that word, and so forth.

That's something Lingoes has that StarDict (and Rikaichan) doesn't.

Edit: And the back/forward buttons for the pop-ups when you use them that way work properly, cycling through the terms you've defined, in order.

Windows (7) dictionary apps - nest0r - 2011-01-12

Bwahahaha, I've done it!

@blackmacros wrote: That sort of laziness is truly motivating. You make me proud.

I did it, blackmacros, wherever you are! In your face. I set up an extra mouse button to double as the Ctrl key in the mouse single/macro settings. Then, I told Lingoes to show the text capture definition for Ctrl+Left Click. Now I just need to click those two mouse buttons and it brings up the pop-up! Laziness sated. No dragging necessary. (Ctrl rather than Shift so if you mess up nothing happens.)

Windows (7) dictionary apps - thermal - 2011-01-13

Wow, that ctrl + right click thing is great.

Can't get the alt/ctrl - right click drill down thing to work in lingoes itself or the ctrl + right click pop ups.. wondering if I am doing something wrong..

Windows (7) dictionary apps - thermal - 2011-01-13

By the way, the ctrl + right click doesn't work with webkit apparently.

You might want to try Googling "ebwin212u.exe".

Yeah, unless someone ever makes an EPWING reader with popup dictionary functionality, I'll stick to Lingoes + EBWin. The only major problem with Lingoes is that it doesn't have any of the bigger J-J dictionaries (Daijisen, Daijirin, Koujien, etc) in Lingoes format, so I end up pasting a word into EBWin when Meikyou or Shinkai doesn't have it.
Ah, Thanks! I didn't know about the clipboard scanning...I guess it does work in OpenOffice then.^^

Windows (7) dictionary apps - nest0r - 2011-01-16

@Bokusenou - Another trick I've worked out for the clipboard scanning is, using the newest Synaptics drivers, which lets you record a hotkey combo and activate it by tapping, say, the bottom right of the touchpad, I set 'clipboard scanning' in Lingoes as ctrl+alt+g, and now trigger it with a bottom right tap. Since my middle mouse button is set to Copy (via mouse settings), in programs where Lingoes usual pop-up doesn't work I now just hit the middle button and tap the touchpad and voila! Pop-up definition. Often I don't even have to select the word with a drag first, can just use the double-click button on my mouse then the middle Copy button. ;p

@nest0r へえ、凄い! I don't have a laptop because I prefer working on desktop computers (bigger keyboard, bigger screen, more power for less money, etc), but this could be really useful for laptop users!

Laptops - perfect-sized screen and keyboard, compact form factor, very little if any difference in power for cost vs. a desktop, while being much more convenient. Get yourself an Asus G73 and lose the desktop.

Oh right, let myself get sidetracked by that comment I missed. I believe I already learned in another thread that I'm outnumbered regarding this issue by those who are... unreconstructed.

Where was I? Oh yes, if one theoretically had a Japanese TTS voice engine installed on their computer, Lingoes would work very well with it! I didn't notice this. Far superior to StarDict's implementation.

Thanks, but I like my desktop just fine. XD

Oh really? Wow... *goes and plays with it* That's pretty neat! If only it could work with Google's TTS, or this one, since they both sound more realistic than I'm sure my hypothetical TTS would, if I were to have one in an alternate universe or something.
