Vocab "Today I Learned" Thread - aphasiac - 2011-01-24 金玉 I'm not 100% clear on whether this is slang, or is the most common term for...that part of the body. Seriously though, who's the joker that decided on those kanji?

It means something like to 'sing the praises of' or 'rejoice.' It was from the sentence 「冷戦後の一人勝ちを謳歌していた米国は、テロという見えざる敵に直面することになった。」, in an article in the 日本経済新聞 that was about the broad effects and meanings of 9/11 in America and 3/11 in Japan. Vocab "Today I Learned" Thread - Tzadeck - 2011-05-23 I don't think there's any point to posting a bunch of random regular words, is there? That seems like it's not very helpful to other people. I can go through a book or dictionary, or anything really, and find random words on my own. Rather, if you find something interesting, or that is used often but you wouldn't find it in a textbook (or dictionary), it could be useful to forum members. Some woman mentioned her period twice in a 10-minute conversation I had the other day. She's not the first one either. Like you say, it's nothing to be ashamed of, but I can't imagine hearing about it in English. It's kind of like talking about a haemorrhoid or something. |
