oh Em gee. This topic is priceless.

Also, I think I just learned something. Is トピ主です、 the same as saying "OP here"? If so I'm liking that kanji usage.

Why the heck does this website look like it was designed in the 90sBig Grin?

And why half the time I'm searching for some topics about something in japanese, then the design also looks as if it has been made in the 90s?

Good forums in japanese - usis35 - 2010-12-10

I have found many more topics changing the number of the log

I have never seen a Japanese website that DIDN'T look like it was made in the 90s.
And for what its worth, geocities still exists in Japan.

They seriously need some web 2.0 or something.

But it's like totally unbelievable...such websites for an advanced country like japan...looks like we just found "the other side of japan".

A somewhat relevant discussion here

As an extension to that, you can use
http://www.bluethree.us/futaba/

If you feel a bit lost with the navigation. I guess it's kinda cheating, though.

It's not really a forum, but you can read about various musicians on this site, and every artist has a forum down there.
Here's for Shiina Ringo.

Mixi's communities コミュニティ

are a very good place where to converse with other people instead of forums.
It seems that japanese people use all kinds of communities on websites rather than the forums we are used to.
Mixi's communities are quite active it seems.

Yes but getting an account is impossible without a 携帯 now.

And how the HELL did no one mention 2ch.net its quite possibly the largest forum in Japan cyberspace with boards covering every freaking topic and genre of anything you can just about conceive of.

if someone wants it badly enough, it is possible to get it if one thinks and acts well enough. I asked my Japanese friend to help me with getting my account. He went back to Japan and talked to his friend who didn't use Mixi but already had an account, so I got her account. He also said that there are people who use 2 cellphones at the same time or something.
There are all kinds options to get to know Japanese people on the net also.

I think mixi is a very good place for immersion, communities, diaries, etc. + combine it with lang-8 and It's very useful.

That seems promising, thanks!
But seeing this kind of a navigation wall scares me XD
My brain's Japanese language operating system automatically explodes when I see this:

Futaba (not 2ch) has been mentioned before; maybe people confused the two. Anyway, if you want to browse 2ch, I suggest using a specialized browser or a browser add-on such as Chaika.

Why should I use it or what does it do?

Ya 2chan was mentioned, but that is merely the image board spin off of 2ch.

Looking at Chaika, the reason you might consider using it is because of the wall of Japanese that made your brain shutdown. There are screenshots on the site for the addon that show sort of what it does. Those sorts of things make browsing 2ch considerably easier.
For getting a little use to 2ch.net you might consider reading this:
http://info.2ch.net/guide/
And looking at the site map explanation for the boards:

The workaround for Mixi is using an ".edu" email to sign up with (then you won't see the 携帯 part of the form), and since a lot of colleges offer free .edu email redirects to their alumni, most people should be able to sign up.

Wait wait wait. So are we talking "tokyo-u.ed.jp" or even "ucla.edu" works? Extrapolate on this a bit because I find this interesting.

That used to work. I'm pretty sure that they changed that though. Although I'm not sure.

I just used my Purdue email address and it worked.

I know that "ucla.edu" type emails work, Japanese "ed.jp" emails should work as well since Mixi's a Japanese site.
