In Chinese, and in English. English isn't complete, you can probably view 90% of the text. Use google books downloader to compile a PDF of the available pages, then ask someone else to do the same, put the two together and you should probably have the full book.

Btw the easiest way to find chinese texts is google: author title TXT. Try a few links and you'll probably find it - Chinese are much better at making ebooks than Japanese.

Places like tdtxt.cn have loads of novels for download.

Mandarin text, and for the English you should google 'Four Great Chinese Classics (Ebook)'.

Here's why I make parallel texts and post all the links:

Quote:Rediscovering LR

And at last I can use my newly attained freedom to dive into all my LR materials. -Discovering the stories of Kenji Miyazawa and O. Henry (among many others). LR could as well be an abbreviation of "Literature Reading" or "Love to Read": Good native actors, a good translation and the thrill of a great story => language learning euphoria!
A new favourite is Miyazawa's story "The Acorns and the Wildcat", together with the fantastic dramatization at fantajikan: Pure happiness:

LR stands for 'Listening-Reading' described here:

It might be easier to find da Vinci-koden and När månen skiner, though (not trying to be snarky, just trying to be helpful).

Det kanske skulle vara lättare att hitta da Vinci-koden och När månen skiner, dock (jag vill inte verka dryg, försöker bara hjälpa till).

walruz,
thanks a lot.
I have no idea about Swedish, just copied a list of some audiobooks.
I would be happy, if you actually found a text two. It would be very helpful.
The most important ones being:
Bulgakov, Michail - Mästaren och Margarita
Orwell, George - Djurfarmen

By the way, the parallel texts are not just for me - it is all done for publico bono.
Otherwise I wouldn't be posting anything here. It is a bother, in fact, takes time.

In the interest of reducing load on the JPod101 servers, I’ve uploaded all of the JDIC Audio Files.

Number of files: 128,275
Required disk space: 1.68 GB
Format: kana - kanji.mp3
Example: しんがい - 侵害.mp3

Download part 1 via Mediafile
Download part 2 via Mediafile
Download part 3 via Mediafile
Download part 4 via Mediafile
Download part 5 via Mediafile
Download part 6 via Mediafile
Download part 7 via Mediafile
Download part 8 via Mediafile
Download part 9 via Mediafile

or

Download via MegaUpload (1 big file, premium users only)

For Anki Users:
"[sound:%(text:Reading)s - %(text:Expression)s.mp3]" can be placed into the answers field to play the sound file. Since the filenames are Japanese, this will only work with the Custom Media Player 2 plugin. Also, the readings must not have furigana.

I didn't like 128,275 .mp3 files sitting in my Anki folder so I wrote a program that will extract only the needed files from the big zip file.

Download the JDIC Audio Extraction Tool via MediaFile (source code is included)

To use:
1) From Anki, export your words deck as facts only to a .txt file.
2) Open JDIC Audio Extractor, fill in all of the fields, click OK.
You can edit in.txt if you don't want to manually fill in the fields each time.

I also didn't like how mplayer (the media player included with Anki) often times doesn’t play small files to completion. So I wrote a media player that DOES play small files to completion (well, actually I just modified the "contest" example program that comes with the Bass audio library).

Download bassplayer via MediaFile (requires Windows; source code is included)

Place bassplayer.exe and bass.dll in the Anki install folder (you should see mplayer.exe there). Just edit the Custom Media Player 2 plugin to use bassplayer instead of mplayer.
I downloaded all the rar packs, but when I gets to within maybe 90% of the first file, and it just reports that the output file (somethingsomething.zip) isn't a valid file, and shuts down. Anyone know what the problem might be? (oh, and I've re-downloaded the first rar file in case that might be the problem, still doesn't work)

Select all 9 files, then extract. These are just parts of one large zip file.

A Request

Hi buonaparte, do you have a copy of the links to playlist doc for "Japanese@Once"?

I have them for Kanji Odyssey 2001 and Essential Japanese Verbs (thanks to you) and would like to round up my collection with the Japanese@Once file.

These links for playlists docs are really very useful study aids.

Many thanks,

Tom

tomhogers,
I might ask somebody to do it, if I had "Japanese@Once". I've just checked and I don't have it.

Tom
Now I understand why I don't have it. It is romaji only. I usually delete such stuff.
I would have to manually type in kanji and hiragana, and the book does not seem to be worth it.

If you need some basic grammar with audio, use
Visualizing Japanese Grammar
250 Essential Japanese Verbs
GrammarBank

I posted everything.

If you don't mind textbooks, there are some written in knaji and hiragana with explanations in English.
Minna no nihongo
Shin Nihongo no Kiso
Assimil
The above have computerized versions where everything is recorded.

There are some more popular textbooks for beginners:
Genki
Japanese for Today
Japanese for Everyone

You might supplement them with some podcasts, JapanesePod101 lessons, parallel texts with line-by-line audio are floating around the net.
For vocabulary only, you might use Japanese Core Sentences 6000. Parallel kanji-spaced kana-English text with line-by-line audio is floating around the net, too. Or you might use Anki decks (I don't use them, I've never used SRS).

If you then need something more advanced and not boring, you might use Hiragana Times, it is bilingual, Japanese-English, some articles are recorded.

Thanks Buonaparte.

I mentioned on an earlier request posting (in this thread but not answered) that this version of J@O is in roumaji but that a newer kana version is available (just fishing around and waiting for someone to take the bait and maybe upload a link).

Even so, the request is not for my personal use but for that of Japanese language newbies being able to use J@O's very good situational examples and grammar notes etc. without knowing any kana and kanji (yet).

I have all the material you mention but I couldn't find the thread for the audio for 250 Essential Japanes Verbs, could you repost it please.

Once again, many thanks.

Tom

I didn't notice you said it was in romaji, sorry. If you find a kanji-kana version, I might make it parallel and create playlists.

Dahl - The Witches 女巫-罗尔德·达尔.有声书.佚名
It is a parallel Mandarin Chinese (hanzi) - Mandarin (pinyin) - English text with audio in Chinese

Some info by the creator of the parallel texts (An educated Mandarin native speaker):

Besides what I mentioned in the last mail about why I chose The Witches to start with, I had thought the audio was not bad until I reached track 6 and the rest. I was almost about to give up on it, after thinking a bit of the whole process, I decided to finish it.

Audiobook market is still on the developing stage in China. Most of the Chinese mainland audiobooks you got online are volunteers' contributions either by recording from radio broadcast or uploading the bits they bought for their own little kids. Some of the uploaders intentionally degrade the audio kbps to shrink the uploading bulk. That's not good for language learning. But for native listeners, it is OK.

The possible mistakes are not many nor serious, that I can assure you.

It is helpful to have a before-hand knowledge of how a certain tones change in actual speech.
Here is a bilingual Chinese-English webpage that explains such natural phonetic changes. As a rule, this kind of changes are not noted in pinyin dubbing, the characters in question would be noted as what they are as characters themselves. I followed this rule.
