Tab-delimited Bilingual Sentence Pairs

Download the "japanese-english.zip". It contains +29,000 sentences added to Tatoeba.org by native Japanese speakers. Add them to Anki, and browse them there "enter a word -be it Japanese or English- and the search will only show sentences that have that word". There should be a way to open them in Excel/Open Office or a software of the sort...

Thanks for keeping these resources up. Even if no one says it enough, it's very much appreciated. And it's certainly not in vain. I developed a new love for reading when I decided to learn Japanese, and I have nephews and nieces that I'm trying to pass that same love of reading to right now.

On reflection, I think I'll have to move this to another server and do the apache installation correctly. It's piggybacking from another available site, which is not ideal. Not to distract the thread too much, but it there a practical way for someone to mirror the site, or at least save some of the content for people to use in case the users.bestweb.net site where to go offline, for someone on limited bandwidth, using a low powered computer such as a laptop?

Offering these files via means of file sharing websites is the best I can do with this broken computer literacy.

If you want them locally, on linux (I guess on a Mac too) you can use:

wget --mirror -w 2 http://users.bestweb.net/~siom/martian_mountain/

The -w 2 adds a two second delay between each attempt to get a file, this lowers the chance of the webhost blocking your connection. On windows there probably is an application to do this, or you can try cygwin to run the linux commands.

On a limited bandwidth connection, I'd use wget but only for a subfolder so you have some control. The entire site is somewhere around 18GB.

You could use reject on wget to block downloading of zips:

The ‘--reject’ option works the same way as ‘--accept’, only its logic is the reverse; Wget will download all files except the ones matching the suffixes (or patterns) in the list.

So, if you want to download a whole page except for the cumbersome mpegs and .au files, you can use ‘wget -R mpg,mpeg,au’. Analogously, to download all files except the ones beginning with ‘bjork’, use ‘wget -R "bjork*"’. The quotes are to prevent expansion by the shell.

I am considering having a look at creating some extra sftp users so you can dump files on the box. I am not particularly fond of useful resources being held only on file sharing sites, who knows what will happen to mediafire, et al.

Have you used the dictionaries before ? Been searching and Lingvo doesn't support Japanese. However, there seems to be a trick in the "Readme before use" file we get after each unzipping of a compressed dictionary and I’ve been trying it for a long long time.
In case someone tries them :
I tried to use ABBYY DSL Compiler to convert these .dsl dictionaries into Lingvo .lsd ones. DSL Compiler failed and displayed the error : “No entries successfully compiled” because “The headword contains characters not supported by the current language” . Because, apparently, DSL Compiler doesn't support Japanese either.

Lingvo 12 does support Japanese. It supports any language if you add a dictionary.
The onscreen mouse-over pop-up works too.

Installed Lingvo 12. Did what the "Readme (before use)" in each dictionary .rar file said. AND got rid of the unnecessary [trn] and [/trns] elements (DSLcompiler didn't accept them). Then used DSLcompiler installed with Lingvo 12. Successfully converted .dsl to .lsd and added the dictionary to Lingvo 12 under (Chinese) and voila ! I have a Lingvo that translates Japanese !
Even added the dictionary to Lingvo x5 and it works ! ^^

I figured out how to access the audio files at http://www.gavo.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/ojad/ (Online Japanese Accent Dictionary) directly, and made two html files (male and female voice) with mapping tables linking to them:

Includes pitch accent information (accented mora location, no pretty CSS/text annotation, but can easily be done with a script).

Audio can be used instead/alongside JDIC audio in Anki, etc. Or maybe in a future version of Rikaisama, where each conjugation (where available) has its own audio file? Wink

I skipped all variations to make it easier for me to extract and align everything correctly. Figured the first one is the most common, so I only left that one.

Also found some errors in OJAD's database, but haven't fixed them in the file (there might be others with compound verbs, haven't checked those):

尊いとうとい, nakatta form is listed as とうとかった instead of とうとくなかった.
遅らすおくらす is treated as an ichidan verb
任すまかす is partially treated as an ichidan verb
煎るいる is partially treated as an ichidan verb

Almost 2500 mp3 files have two variations, marked as _1_(fe)male.mp3 and _2_(fe)male.mp3.
On the site http://www.gavo.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/ojad/ one is above, the other is below, but randomly.
I'm not sure which pitch distribution you chose and if mp3 recordings always agree with the pitch marked in your html file.

The pitch is always the first one, but the audio is also always _1_, so they don't always match as you have found out.

Edit: yeah, I'll have to replace 783 mp3 files. I'll upload them separately.

Edit2: post updated, link with replacement mp3s added. male.html and female.html have not been updated so they still point to the incorrect audio files.

All in all there are 38,933 audio files, only 13 of which are male. All erroneous ones from post #418 are removed.

Edit3: there are some clips some with _3_ as first. I'll have to update them as well.

Edit4: OJAD_replace.rar updated. 25 files updated and included 懇切丁寧.

I guess I could, but only if I can't help you with renaming them. What was the problem? For example, if the audio directory is on your desktop, you put RR.exe into the folder, open command prompt and type: cd desktop/ojad. Now you just type/paste the command above and I see no reason why it shouldn't work.
