N1 in July. Let's do this.

2011 JLPT study thread - Jarvik7 - 2010-12-06

Wish there was an N0 :/

2011 JLPT study thread - bizarrojosh - 2010-12-06

N2 in July here.

Let's get some book recommendations.

It seems as if grammar isn't as important as it used to be so what kinds of things should we study? I'm obviously going to be studying lots of vocab and reading a ton; any other advice?

There are higher tests than JLPT right? Maybe you can prepare for those?

2011 JLPT study thread - vinniram - 2010-12-06

I'm going to be finishing off Japanese For Everyone and DOBJG by the end of January, then working in vocab, production, and eventually DOIJG/DOAJG. Here in Brisbane, they only have the test in December. Do you think, considering what I've covered, that I could have a shot at N5? I just want somewhere realistic to aim at.

N2 in December here.

Reading, then some reading and after that more reading Wink Add vocab from that as you go (assuming you did the list already) and watch as much media as you possibly can English subs/Japanese subs/no subs all depending on how comfortable you feel in each particular case.

Old official list had around 5-5.5k words, I currently have 7k+ in mine and still there were quite a few words I didn't know during this Decembers N2. So don't underestimate constantly adding new vocab during your study.

I don't know how much time you'll dedicate to Japanese but considering you have a whole year to prepare N3 is a very safe bet.

N1

I like unicom for grammar. All sentences are on cd so you can double up on the listening.

Also using unicom for reading. The format is good and the reading selections are nicely varied. Hit it hard a month before the test.

Other than that I'm reading two native level articles a day. One from a business source (professional reasons) and another article from whatever I find interesting. I'm looking to add about 100 new words a week here.

Listening - Just tv shows and life in Japan.

There are, but they are either largely unknown (JTEST, BJT, EJU) or not particularly suited to second language learners (nihongo kentei). There is of course kanji kentei but it's too not in the same category.

Ideally JLPT would have many more levels and level 1 would represent an extremely high level of aptitude, like kanken.

BJT was the best thing after JLPT but unfortunately it's dead now and was never very popular (which is why it's dead).

Think of N0 as going into an interview requiring Japanese ability and 5 seconds after you open your mouth the people on the interview panel are thinking, "yea, he/she speaks Japanese."

I'll be trying N1 again in a year probably...

Listening, grammar, vocab, kanji - mostly okay already
Reading dense, boring articles - currently a trainwreck

How should I improve my ability in the latter skill without falling asleep? Reading this kind of stuff is a pain in the ass even in my own language.

Read a lot of stuff you are interested in. If you are into sports go buy a Japanese sports magazine. Do that until a month before the test then switch to a N1 reading guide to get used to the JLPT "style".

I'll be taking N1. I could've been ready this year, but I completely slacked off. I want to know why Poland and Russia are the only places in Europe you can do it in July.

Not all news is boring. Currently stories about North Korea, 普天間, WikiLeaks etc are quite interesting, and if you check the 社会 section, you'll find wacky and tragic stories about murders, car accidents, preteen suicide etc. You could also search around for amateur news sites/blogs about topics you're interested in, or try picking up some magazines if you can.

If it's more the difficulty/unfamiliarity of the writing style that is putting you off, then maybe you could bridge the gap with 漫画の新聞. The stories have a short summary and a two-page manga, which include some amount of the vocabulary and sentence structure you'd see in an article, but in a much easier to digest format. Saying that, if you look at the likes of 共同ニュース or NHK, you'll find a lot of incredibly short articles. NHK and TBS have video to accompany some of their stories too.

I could swear we only had JLPT once a year until N-system came along and there was N3 this July that I somehow missed. This was the info I gathered from different Polish sites while doing preliminary research into JLPT.

Don't know what changed and why but I do know there were lots of people taking JLPT (3 different locations for different levels) and there is some kind of cultural exchange program in our universities that gives students access to Japanese lessons with a native for free. Good relations on academic level and high interest might be enough.

A question:
Has anyone ever mangaged to actually download the vids? I mean to your computer?

These are very easy to download for later viewing (FNN, TBS, NNN):

Also going for N2 in July (having taken N3 yesterday).

I second the recommendation for the Unicom books, though for level 3. The reading drill book was good, although the questions in the listening drill book were much harder than the real test itself, I felt. Which is probably a good thing.

2011 JLPT study thread - solwyvern - 2010-12-06

I went for N4 yesterday. It went quite well in my opinion.
Would it be possible to make N2 in another year?

2011 JLPT study thread - ta12121 - 2010-12-06

JLPT 1 in july at the university near me(well not really near me, it always takes me 40mins by bus to get there)

2011 JLPT study thread - Asriel - 2010-12-06

Depends on how I feel when I get my N1 results back in March :/

Depends on you and your study methods. If you study next year in Japan in a language school, you will most probably pass N2 next year.

solwyvern,
"I went for N4 yesterday. It went quite well in my opinion.

By June? Possibly not. By Next December? Yes, definitely.
I would follow these steps that I learned from my experience. (Although I'm no Tae Kim)

A) Get the kanji done. Go through all 2000 kanji and then learn a word for all the new kanji. (700~ish) Don't bother with onyomi and kunyomi -- the kanji section is more of "do you know this word's pronuncation" not the kanji.

B) Go though the vocabulary. 6000 words is the gideline but since they can choose 20% words that arn't on the list then 7000 may be best. (Smart.fm Core is good for this.)

C) Grammar. Now that you have the kanji ability and vocabulary you can pick up grammar much more easily. Books like kanzen master were impossible for me before I picked up the vocabulary. Keep in mind that the grammar section is the smallest in the test.

D) Read and listen. Stretch your Japanese by reading articles etc. I sometimes used online game guides for Japanese games and I learned a lot of words like "abbreviation".

11 whole months is a lot of time. You could spend maybe three months on each of the steps or do something completely different. But start early!

"Depends on how I feel when I get my N1 results back in March"
I'm getting my N2 results in February. I though that was a long time to wait!

I'm not going to take the JLPT N1 next year. I start my university life in September and I want to get Chinese and Korean up to my Japanese level before then. But I also want to start sentences with Japanese going monolingual. Smile Maybe 2012 I will take all three tests: JLPT/KLPT and HSK? Anyways good luck to you all!~

Maybe I'll take the N4 or N3 when I'm in Japan next December. I haven't quite decided if at all, and I don't quite know which of them, but it's in the back of my head as a goal.

2011 JLPT study thread - Rina - 2010-12-06

N2 in December. Intend of finishing the N3 studies in February/March (and not earlier because I have tests... -_-).

These next 2 weeks I'll try to finish 4/5 lessons of AIAIJ and will add many new JLPT words into Anki. Starting tomorrow night, hurrah!

Anyway, this time I'm focusing my study a lot more on speking/listening/reading rather than writing.

You need to use an RTMP dumper to download the FLV stream to a file.

get one here: http://goo.gl/jkj1

then to get the RTMP address for the video, go to the story you want to watch, press 'PLAY' on the video image, and when the little video box expands you need to right-click just outside the flash video but inside the video box. View source, and the address is in there, like this:
Quote:value="fms=rtmp://flv.nhk.or.jp/ondemand/flv/news/&amp;movie=K10056809911_1012070038_1012070041" name="flashvars"></object></td>
edit: that only applies to NHK, I haven't figured out the TBS videos yet (but NHK only took 10 minutes)
edit2: for TBS videos, just click the 'WMP' link (either one) underneath the video. If you open the file in VLC, you can save the stream. Or, you can open the file in a text editor and copy/paste the html link to the actual video (asf) which you find inside into your browser and download the file.

For some reason I'm reminded of the "Can you pass JLPT1 in 3 months?" thread.
