RAP News ft. Julian Assange - fuaburisu - 2010-12-05 This is so full of awesome! Don't miss the "killstreak" part about halfway point. RAP NEWS 4: Wikileaks vs The Pentagon Watch till the end ![]() RAP NEWS 5: Wikileaks v Bill O'Reilly - the War on Journalism (ft. Julian Assange) I wanted to make a donation yesterday but my bank's online site said the BIC code was not valid. I think it's the XXX in there (see their support page). Anybody en Europe managed to send money to Wikileaks? RAP News ft. Julian Assange - Evil_Dragon - 2010-12-05 This is beyond awesome RAP News ft. Julian Assange - vinniram - 2010-12-05 this is pretty cool. Julian Assange is what the world needs right now. RAP News ft. Julian Assange - nest0r - 2010-12-05 I'm a fan of the idea of Wikileaks as a tactical, curated exposure of information to create pressure for government transparency, probity, accountability, etc., but my impression is that, as opposed to many of the Wikileaks people, this Assange person is more a fan of enormous indiscriminate offloadings of information that don't seem logical or sound. RAP News ft. Julian Assange - Thora - 2010-12-06 Not nearly as entertaining as Fabrice's link, but this essay on Assange's "philosophy" might interest some of you: Julian Assange and the Computer Conspiracy; “To destroy this invisible government” posted by zunguzungu Through his lawyers, Assange has recently announced that he will disclose unfiltered documents if he is brought to trial. Apparently tens of thousands of people now have unredacted versions (other documents?) in an encrypted form. The plot thickens... RAP News ft. Julian Assange - vinniram - 2010-12-06 Thanks for posting that, it was a really interesting read. The whole issue of how the Australian government reacted to the Assange/wikileaks issue just goes to show how subservient the Australian government (along with many others, obviously) is to the usa. It is a government which cares more about appeasing usa than its own citizens. RAP News ft. Julian Assange - nest0r - 2010-12-06 These are also interesting: http://www.firstamendmentcoalition.org/2010/06/secrecy-news-criticizes-wikileaks/ http://en.rsf.org/united-states-criticism-of-wikileaks-is-not-a-17-08-2010,38169.html http://news.cnet.com/8301-31921_3-20011106-281.html http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703428604575419580947722558.html http://en.rsf.org/united-states-open-letter-to-wikileaks-founder-12-08-2010,38130.html https://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/24/world/24assange.html Up with Wikileaks, down with Assange, I say! But according to him, he's indispensable, so hmm. ;p I don't really care about Assange, but I'm sick of hearing about him as opposed to Wikileaks, and it seems he's partially to blame for that, even after parsing out the stuff that's likely to be specious attacks on his character. But what do I know, I've spent 5 minutes reading about it. RAP News ft. Julian Assange - Womacks23 - 2010-12-06 Always a good move to blackmail America to avoid a Swedish rape charge. RAP News ft. Julian Assange - Tzadeck - 2010-12-06 News/current evens and music are always win. RAP News ft. Julian Assange - ファブリス - 2010-12-06 @nestOr: the more I read about it the more I echo your sentiment. You'll find as many supportive articles from other journalists that counterbalance the acidic one from nytimes, though. Their Swiss Bank account was just frozen today. Sounds like Julian is getting into a lot of trouble. This is unfolding by the hour almost. I'm afraid the week is not going to pass with very good news. He may be arrested in the coming days. The sad thing in this, is this will give governments an excuse to enforce more control on the web. RAP News ft. Julian Assange - Javizy - 2010-12-06 Apparently he's going to be questioned by British police over the non-rape rape charge, and the US attorney general is taking steps to prosecute him and stem the flow of the leaks. After the questioning, he has to appear in court within 24 hours, and the bail will be around £100-£200,000. I wondered why he chose to come to England of all places. RAP News ft. Julian Assange - Womacks23 - 2010-12-06 Do you come from some strange country where this is not rape? The New York Times today quoted accounts given by the women to police and friends as saying Assange "did not comply with her appeals to stop when (the condom) was no longer in use." BTW he is being charged with full on rape, not sex by surprise. That appears to be a misunderstanding. The minimum sentence for his charge is 2 years. Plus molestation and unlawful coercion if that holds up in court. RAP News ft. Julian Assange - vinniram - 2010-12-06 Womacks23 Wrote:Do you come from some strange country where this is not rape?what stops new york times making up whatever it feels like making up... i won't trust that publication ever RAP News ft. Julian Assange - Womacks23 - 2010-12-06 Then maybe wikileaks will release the transcripts of his full rape charge. RAP News ft. Julian Assange - Tzadeck - 2010-12-06 Well, Assange's rape charges have something to do with whether or not he should be put in jail, but it really doesn't have anything to do with Wikileaks. (Which reminds me, why was there almost no media coverage about what Roman Polanski did when he was in danger of being extradited? There was a lot of talk about what he was charged with, which was a plea bargain, but almost nothing I read actually said what he did. Read that testimony if you want to hear something depressing and awful) Of course, if he did those things he should be put in jail. I'm a bit confused about what Wikileaks is trying to do at this point, frankly. I don't mind if Wikileaks posts things that make people or governments who have done bad things look bad. If people have done something bad, then it should be made public and they should have to deal with it. I'm an American, and this includes bad stuff my country has done--including stuff like the hellicopter video posted on Wikileaks. Maybe it will aid terrorists in finding new recruits or something like that, but that's kind of deserved. If you kill civilians for no reason, you should have to suffer the consequences, and if your enemy gets more recruits over it then that's also your fault. It's certainly not Wikileak's fault. In other words, I'm good on the whole whistle-blowing thing, as well as any sort of anticorruption efforts. It doesn't matter if the documents are classified, or it's illegal, or anything like that. It's classified because people are trying to cover their ass, but they should be held responsible for what they do. However, Wikileaks seems to post unnecessary stuff that is not whistle-blowing nor does it have to do with anticorruption. For example, posting a list of things important to American national security is silly. Mostly because now you have a lot of organizations, with little security, who don't even necessarily have direct ties with America, that now are at high risk of being harmed. It's not journalism. Nobody was doing anything wrong, and the public is not gonna benefit from the information. Basically Wikileaks just put people in danger for no reason. RAP News ft. Julian Assange - nest0r - 2010-12-06 @Tzadeck - That's what I was implying above, and that's what I think is an Assange thing rather than a Wikileaks thing, hence 'up with Wikileaks, down with Assange'; the connection of the rape charges with Wikileaks, then, is Assange himself as this extraneous and literally mis-leading persona that is generating criticism (see my above links, lifted in part from the Wikipedia section on criticism of Wikileaks, combined with NY profile of Assange). I think Assange is a CIA plant being used to disrupt the metanarrative and hamstring Wikileaks! ;p RAP News ft. Assange has no journalistic ability nor any inclination to be responsible. He is just a data dumper. I say Assange and not wikileaks has no responsibility because he recently had to fire a significant amount of staff who were against releasing the war files and the current diplomatic cables. Everyone with a sense of responsibility got purged back in September. http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2010/09/wikileaks-revolt/ RAP News ft. In the course of my former duties I helped to coordinate multilateral action against a brutal regime in the Balkans, impose sanctions on a renegade state threatening ethnic cleansing, and negotiate a debt relief programme for an impoverished nation. None of this would have been possible without the security and secrecy of diplomatic correspondence, and the protection of that correspondence from publication under the laws of the UK and many other liberal and democratic states. An embassy which cannot securely offer advice or pass messages back to London is an embassy which cannot operate. Diplomacy cannot operate without discretion and theAnd the answer. Julian Assange - Tzadeck - 2010-12-06 Womacks23 Wrote:Ah, yeah. (Although, I thought the threat was that he'll dump everything if the higher ups in wikileaks are arrested--not just him personally.) I just meant that we should judge whether or not wikileaks is good or bad seperately from what we think of Assange personally.Tzadeck Wrote:Well, Assange's rape charges have something to do with whether or not he should be put in jail, but it really doesn't have anything to do with Wikileaks. It does matter because he is threatening to dump everything he has if he is arrested. He is blackmailing the world hoping to stay out of jail for rape. Also, it seems to me that he's not doing this to get out of rape charges. The way he wants to run wikileaks has been clear for a long time and it hasn't changed with the charges. I also think the push to arrest him with an international warrant would be far less strong were he not releasing these diplomatic cables. I think Assange would be doing this with or without the rape charges, because he believes he's doing the right thing. He's just not as bright as he could be in assessing what is helping the world and what is making it worse. RAP News ft. Julian Assange - ファブリス - 2010-12-07 I agree that Assange is irresponsible. Saying he's committed "full on rape" is rather crude. I have read much more nuanced and balanced opinion from a woman blogger. Couldn't find the link again. What she said more or less is that rape is often between people who already know each other, and it is not always a violent act as as is often portrayed by the media. The issue is consent. She didn't jump to conclusions. We just don't know what happened. RAP News ft. Julian Assange - truando - 2010-12-07 They just arrested him. I assume we'll know a bit more after he's added his view of the story. RAP News ft. I'd be interested to know the timing of the woman's allegations though. Did she report it straight away, or did it come out later? RAP News ft. Julian Assange - thurd - 2010-12-07 Javizy Wrote:I agree with Javizy on this, your information depends on where you are you looking for it.Womacks23 Wrote:The New York TimesI'd have more faith in an account of Tiananmen Square from the Chinese media. I've read incredible stories about it and each of them is as good as any. One was stating that he just had sex with both of them but they didn't know about each other and when they found out they decided to revoke their consent for sex they already had (supposedly Swiss law that allows this), this looks to me like a Monty Python sketch rather than rape charges. Second one says they had sex, condom broke, he didn't stop. To me this could range from a lovers quarrel to normal rape depending on situation, what really happened and was violence involved. What I do find intriguing here is that it happens on 2 occasions with 2 different women, so either he has some enormous junk, bought a really faulty batch of condoms, has some weird sex thing he likes to do or this whole thing is completely bogus. Rape cases in general are very difficult to judge and these circumstances make it even harder. There is no information on obduction so I'm guessing they are both unharmed, which doesn't necessarily mean that it wasn't rape (as stated by ファブリス) but in my eyes adds doubt given these circumstances. I do know one thing (cant be 100% sure since its done by the media), rape charges magically surfaced right after he disclosed another batch of documents (looks like it was him who was blackmailed) and that both women went to authorities about a week after their intimate meet. It looks very suspicious given that Wikileaks has been a thorn in US&A ass for quite some time now. |
