Language Question - akrodha - 2007-07-17 I'm practicing my Japanese by reading the RSS feed on the Smash Bros. Brawl website on nintendo.com. I came across this today: 食らっちゃマズイので Am I right in thinking that 食らっちゃ is a shortened form of 食べられてしまう? Furthermore, are there message boards or other sites where I can ask these kinds of questions? I wouldn't want to flood the Koohii forums... Language Question - JimmySeal - 2007-07-17 Probably a form of 食らう-くらう. You can ask questions like this on http://www.jref.com/forum Language Question - Chadokoro_K - 2007-07-17 Hi akrodha, The ちゃ in 食らっちゃマズイので is a colloquial contraction of ては. So this is 食らってはマズイ which basically means the same thing as 食らってはならない or 食らってはいけない, that "it is no good (won't do) if you [do] s.t." In addition to meaning "eat" or "drink," 食らう (くらう) also means to "receive" s.t. undesirable. A fun example is: この野郎、これでも食らえ! "Take that, you bastard!" (Said when punching someone in the face, etc.) Language Question - akrodha - 2007-07-19 Hey Chadokoro_K, thanks for the explanation! I knew that construction, I just forgot the contracted version. And I like your example! It's going into my flash card program. And JimmySeal, thanks for the link! |
