Buying addiction phenomenon + SRS - jettyke - 2010-11-13 I've been having this interesting idea for quite a while as to how to make srs more irresistible and rewarding. Let's imagine you are going to a shop you have money. You can get food in coloured enticing packages of food with it. In fact, You can get those packages only with money. And maybe that's what makes buying an addictive gambling-like experience. You have a certain amount of currency and now is the best part... you try to get as make the best purchase with that amount you are eager to spend. The more you get, the better. The more satisfying the experience, the better. I think that this system of buying things with currency triggers rewards from our reward system, perhaps increases our dopamine levels. And maybe because of the change in dopamine levels some people get very addicted to buying. In our days I guess they're called shopaholics. Now to the point. Recently I got an idea that, what if we could use this phenomenon when SRSing? It depends, but sometimes srsing is like a compulsory studying tool, that I have told myself that I should study with. But what if we would make it into an addictive and rewarding shopping-like process? There is something certain that makes shopping & gambling addictive and rewarding, and maybe we could use that something certain to improve srsing? My possible ideas would be: 1) When you will have finished your reps, the program would say: "Sorry, but unfortunately you have run out of your SRS credit." 2)You have a certain amount of currency (new cards for the day), and you can spend that currency on knowledge. So for example let' s say you have 30 credits and today, you happen to buy a Kanji and 29 sentences in japanese. So you buy and store them in your brain. And at 30 you have run out of your daily credit (amount of new cards per day). This limit could help with keeping up with the reviews later or something else. The idea would be to make you really feel like you were accumulating knowledge to your brain and make you miss srs. Perhaps this all is just nonsense. But I felt like I just had to share this idea as I don't have time nor abilities in programming to make use of this idea. So I am hoping that in case there is something useful in this idea, srsing would improve a bit indirectly. Maybe someone has programming skills and wants to make an app for anki or something but doesn't have any good ideas. Thanks for your time. Don't let myself do certain other things unless I am caught up on reps or finished my lessons etc. That's the extent of it though. |
