I came across this word while taking a N3 practice test: 五行目 - ごぎょうめ

I can't find it jisho.org or using google. Anyone know?

Thanks!

P.S. - I've been using this site for about 6 months now and it is great!

Using Rikaichan and the Yahoo dictionary, 五行 means the 5 elements (from Chinese philosophy, earth, wood, fire, metal and water), and 目 (め) is an ordinal marker.

Something like that.

What was the sentence? I think it can also mean a line or column of text (the 5th line in this case).

"5th line". Or "5th verse" if you are reading the bible.

The sentence was:

このページの五行目を見てください。

5th line definitely makes sense.

Yeah... that makes more sense than the 5 elements. Big Grin

Rikaichan is far from perfect.

Yea it's easy to miss this word if you are not into Buddhism, go to church in Japan, or take the JLPT.

I don't know, seems like a pretty pedestrian construction: number, 行, 目を見てください — especially for techies... Is using a kanji numeral all that uncommon in this phrasing?

In any context, I'm sure 五行目 means "the 5th line."

一行目 二行目 三行目 四行目 五行目 6行目 7行目 8行目 9行目 10行目 ~ 64行目 ~ 128行目 ~ 1024行目 ・・・
”五行目” くらいまでは、漢数字で書くほうが普通な気がします。プログラムとかの分野ではまた別で、たぶん漢数字は常に避けるんじゃないでしょうかね。

I did a small double take when I saw kiki's avatar move. I had no idea we could have animated avatars on this forum.

I may have to update mine to an animated kanji stroke order diagram.
