Reviewing the kanji "by the book" - Nagareboshi - 2010-11-06 I came up with the idea of reviewing the kanji in a different way. After having had a review session with Anki, and reading a good book later on, it kind of struck me. Whenever i saw a key word in the book used in RTK, i suddenly saw the kanji before my inner-eye. And this is why i came up with the following idea, which i thought is worth sharing. I took out a sheet of paper, opened up my word application, and continued reading Jane Eyre by Emily Bronte. Now, each time i saw a key word, i picked up my pencil, wrote the kanji down on a blank sheet of paper, and then looked it up in RTK. I then added the word i saw to a list, containing the page number of the book, and the Heisig Number. If it happens that i failed a kanji, because i wrote it incorrectly, or i have forgotten how it looks like, i marked the frame number to see why i failed it. Because i could not remember the story, or i was mixing up something, things of that nature. This method really adds some fun in reviewing the kanji, besides doing regular reviews with Anki or any other SRS. And it has the added benefit of reading a good book along the way.
Reviewing the kanji "by the book" - adoette - 2010-11-06 Actually, I had noticed this happening myself. My family thinks I'm losing my mind because I'll be sitting there listening to some horrible story on the evening news and then I'll start smiling and drawing in the air. I like your idea about doing it out of books. Considering how much I read everyday, this would be a great way to work in extra review time during 'free time', and I wouldn't have to change my routine up much in order to do it. Excellent idea! Reviewing the kanji "by the book" - vonPeterhof - 2010-11-07 I had a similar idea, which I described here: http://forum.koohii.com/showthread.php?tid=6464 . Basically I use college lectures instead of books, which not only helps me review the kanji, but also helps me pay attention and stay awake during said lectures. Reviewing the kanji "by the book" - jmignot - 2010-11-07 A similar idea was implemented in the Firefox add-on "characterizer" (fomerly "kanjilish"). It is discussed here : http://tinyurl.com/kanjilish Reviewing the kanji "by the book" - Nagareboshi - 2010-11-07 jmignot Wrote:A similar idea was implemented in the Firefox add-on "characterizer" (fomerly "kanjilish").vonPeterhofs idea is indeed quite similar to my own. This one, on the other hand, is not. The only thing i do on my pc is keeping a word list. If i spot a key word in the book, i first write the kanji, and then take note which key word it was, including RTK frame numbers in my word application. And i do write it only once, not every time i see a corresponding word. Thats why i keep the wordlist. I dont actually write the kanji on pc, or copy and paste it, for that would render the method useless. I think it is good, because you can do it anywhere, with no need of having access to a pc. The idea presented on that website seems interesting thought. I might give it a try as well.
Reviewing the kanji "by the book" - jmignot - 2010-11-07 壱 certainly did not mean to dismiss your idea, nor to say that it duplicates Characterizer. 壱 only wanted to take the opportunity to 点oint out an interesting utility which may be of interest to some readers of this thread.
