What's the Best Baby Name? - vrythngiseasy - 2010-10-21

My wife and I are expecting a new born child pretty soon. We're thinking of a baby name that's unique and has a good meaning behind it. For example, Tsuki (moon).

List possible names with its meaning and kanji spelling too, if possible. Right now, we're not sure if it's a boy or girl. But hopefully a boy :-) So lend us your thoughts. Thank you.

Tony

Tony? I thought that was an American name. Since my partner is Japanese, we felt like using a name from her home country and sticking with my last name.

Yea I was just kidding with you.

I would pick something that would be easily transferable if your kid ever wanted to live outside of Japan.

Boy - Ken
Girl - Mari, Maria, Erin, Erina

Wow really? I thought that film was terrible! In fact my Japanese girlfriend and a lot of Japanese friends of mine are always surprised about which Japanese films get released in the west, it's usually shockers.
My girlfriend bought a Japanese film resently just because she liked the actor, I can't remember the name but it was about catching magical bugs that do stuff to your senses and it was absolutely terrible.

Anyway back on topic I like the name Chloe but kuroi is black in Japanese so not very nice.

Japanese movies are, in general, terrible. There are a few really great ones every few years (there used to be a lot more before CG and everything became idol-centric) but on the whole they're no better than a western daytime soap opera. Who cares about the story/acting/directing/awful CG/bad orchestration as long as it stars <some SMAP guy> *swoon.

I'm just bitter because I started watching JP movies when most were actually pretty good. I want to make babies with Ueto Aya's but suicide is preferable to watching anything starring her unless it's a Softbank commercial. I think my body started to shut down to protect itself when I attempted to watch Azumi.

So to get this back on topic, name your kid Aya and hope she never becomes an actress. Or if it's a boy, name him Tadanobu and hope that he does.

My son is 20 months old and his name is Yuki. his second name is Maurice. That way he'll be able to chose one day if he doesn't like Yuki.

I think it's really cute and the name fits him like a glove. i live in Switzerland and people react very positively even they never heard the name before.

Good luck finding the perfect name. feel free to use Yuki Smile

Best babies names for boy/girl are Phoenix and Sapphire respectively. That's what my kids are going to be called Smile

Or do you mean best Japanese baby names? Sorry can't really help there, except to say that if it's a girl, please be original and choose one without 子 at the end; I'm bored of meeting J-girls named XY子.

Sapphire? No offence but it sounds like a stripper's name.

Get back to us after you talk these over with your partner, I like a good laugh Tongue

Sapphire? Sounds like a name for a graphic card, are you gonna to have some new graphics? lol

No, seriously.. Names are something children and finally adults have to wear around their whole life, so think about it well enough. In your case i would chose some japanese name that sounds more or less neutral to others ("Heh, i did not even know that's Japanese!"), like Erika (which is wonderfully written in kanjis, too, if you like that as you wrote). I would not chose stuff like "Masako" (massacre?), you know Smile

@truando: Yuki sounds great and i like the idea of the "alternative" -- if he does not like it, he can "delete" it, as he has another name left, nee.

What's the Best Baby Name? - vrythngiseasy - 2010-10-22

Ha ha! Sapphire sounds like a stripper's name...? :-)

I like how truando gave the baby 2 names. And having it decide later down the road. That's a very good idea.

Solution: Have partner decide a name.

However, if you're going to be living in an English speaking area, by golly, give the poor kid an English name and same him a lfietime of stupid questions (durrr where are you from what does your name mean / Are you Chinese???).

I would not go with tsuki or yuki. (I can already see kids teasing "sucky" "yucky" lol)

any name with らりるれろ will get the pronunciation mauled in an English speaking country. Ken works Wink It's good to choose a name both sets of relatives can pronounce imo.

Yea the r won't get pronounced in a Japanese way but kids in America will just associate it with Mary or Erin. Kids can be really, really, really, mean. Imagine a 12 year old in America meeting someone named Tsuki Womacks.... Yea I wouldn't want to expose my kids to that if it can be avoided by picking a neutral sounding name.

I'm not sure but bullying over a foreign name sounds a bit 1980s to me.

You can definitely do better than Tsuki Womacks though. Maki, Yuka, Sayaka, Mana would all sound fine to me.

I would pick anything from a Samurai Warriors game. Only the best for your child!

Nobunaga, Tadakatsu, Yoshihiro, etc.

I found a couple samurai names that appeals to us. We're not in a hurry to decide so hopefully we find a suitable name.

I told her - she's liked them both! Only thing is, she said "Phoenix" sounds a bit too similar to "penis", so may encourage bullying..weird cos I really don't hear it.. Sad
