Taking an undergraduate/masters degree in japanese studies (in JAPAN) - Rina - 2010-10-15

I'm not happy with the university course I'm enrolled in, and for a few years that I've been wanted to study in Japan.

I want to take a degree on japanese studies. If possible a masters degree, since I could finish my bachelors - 2nd year student (chinese major, japanese minor). I have so much to write, that I don't even know where to start.

1 - do you know any japanese universities who offer either a bachelors or a master degree in japanese studies?

2 - Since I'm not a japanese major, how could I apply to the monbukagakusho scholarship?

"Japanese studies students
Applicants must be from 18 to 30 years old. Applicants must be enrolled as undergraduate students in faculties or schools which major in Japanese language or Japanese culture in a university outside Japan at the time when they come to Japan and must be enrolled in the home institution at the time when they return to their home countries. Students majoring in the fields other than Japanese language or Japanese culture who wish to study various aspects of Japan( engineering, economy, agriculture, architecture, art, etc.)as part of their major studies should apply to the JASSO for admission to the Short-term Student Exchange Promotion Program. "

-I'm not a japanese major
-I want to major in japanese and not in economy, agriculture, whatever :p

I still have to read a lot, and I wanted to write a lot more, but I forgot what I wanted to say -_-

3 - I know that this will take some time, and in the meanwhile I'll continue where I am and studying more and japanese (with the help of textbooks and anki Big Grin). I feel that my japanese doens't improve because I don't talk japanese other than in classes, and even there is not that much.

4 - I don't know how much this will cost me (with a schollarship, without it I believe it's not possible, but I've been saving some money for something like this for quite some time.

I definitely want to study japanese (4kyuu level right now) and getting a job with it. But here in Portugal that's definitely not possible, the course I'm enrolled in is the best here, but it still sucks (even though our 2 japanese teachers are great, but we only have 4 hours a week.)

お願いします。

Depending on my luck in my graduate job search I might like to do a masters in Japanese in Japan, just to give me a chance to spend a year in the country to get my Japanese up to scratch to a level high enough to jobseek there.

So I'm also interested in this.

I sent an email to Fukuoka daigaku and to kansai gaidai (even though I didn't really understand the japanese studies program - is it a master's) asking for a few things. One of the problems is that thanks to the bolonha process a bachelor's degree in europe only lasts 3 years. And in order to apply to a master's one should have studied at least for 16 years. If the bachelor's here only last 3 years, I'll only have studied for 15 (12 + 3).

If you know of any universities that have a master's degree in japanese studies please let me know. I already searched for a lot of them and only found 3/4 universities.

Could some moderator move this thread to the appropriate forum?

That sucks. English university degrees are also only 3 years but the school system leading up to them is 13 years (often split something like a 6/5/2 pattern), so the total is 16 years anyway.

I sent an email to fukuoka university (and have been sending to other ones) and they told me there's no problem. For Kobe City university however I should go there 1 year as a research student in order to have 16 years of studies.

I also asked about scholarships and for Fukuoka University getting a scholarship is impossible. I can apply for a scholarship outside the university, let's say, to the japanese embassy, right?
