Research suggests yoga can counteract fibromyalgia - nest0r - 2010-10-14 http://www.labspaces.net/107050/Research_suggests_yoga_can_counteract_fibromyalgia According to new research conducted at Oregon Health & Science University, yoga exercises may have the power to combat fibromyalgia — a medical disorder characterized by chronic widespread pain. The research is being published in the November 10 online edition of the journal Pain and will appear online Thursday, Oct. 14. "Previous research suggests that the most successful treatment for fibromyalgia involves a combination of medications, physical exercise and development of coping skills," said James Carson, Ph.D., a clinical health psychologist and an assistant professor of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine in the OHSU School of Medicine. "Here, we specifically focused on yoga to determine whether it should be considered as a prescribed treatment and the extent to which it can be successful." Research suggests yoga can counteract fibromyalgia - hereticalrants - 2010-10-14 Research suggests that yoga can damn you to hell. http://www.cbn.com/health/fitness/bagby_yoga-alternative.aspx Research suggests yoga can counteract fibromyalgia - Tzadeck - 2010-10-14 Interesting (especailly since it actually sounds like a properly done study, though small). As the comments on the site also say, I'd be interested to see if similar stretching/light exercise are similarly effective. I'd like to find ways to make people with fibromyalgia have better lives, but I'd like to do it without the woo-woo and new age stuff that's sometimes included with yoga programs in America. Research suggests yoga can counteract fibromyalgia - untmdsprt - 2010-10-14 I took a yoga class in college as an elective and it was a great stress reducer. There was none of that religious voodoo Christian or otherwise in the class. I'm glad I took that class to get through my main classes, and getting out of an abusive relationship with an ex-boyfriend. I've done a small amount of yoga in Japan as well, and once again there was no woo-woo. Both were pretty good experiences. But, woo-woo yoga definitely exists, even though I got lucky with the two yoga instructors I've encountered personally. Research suggests yoga can counteract fibromyalgia - ファブリス - 2010-10-15 Depends what you call "woo woo". Most Yoga teachers will do the Oooom chanting once at the beginning and sometimes once at the end. Many Yoga teachers will also chant something at the beginning, usually lines from Patanjali's Yoga Sutra; i.e. the guy who wrote it all down first. It's basically a way to thank Patanjali for the teaching, a way to show gratitude, it is no different from many martial arts practices. You can ignore the sutras and be grateful to the teacher instead if you feel like it, gratitude is a very powerful feeling. Or you can simply close your eyes and feel grateful for being there and having the chance to wind down and learn something new. Yoga is a spiritual path, so that may put off some people, but as it has been introduced in the west there are also many good Western teachers who do not give any discourse after the practice, or do not even do the chanting. Frankly you should be more worried about whether the teacher pays attention to the students, gives good instructions, etc instead of whether he does the chanting or dispenses a few spiritual quotes at the end of the practice. Those are the "woo woo" teachers in my mind. For example if the teacher shows you a pause and then sits down and tell you to do it five times, that's a a bad teacher. A good teacher will do it five times himself until he sees everybody got it right, or will walk around and check everyone and correct every mistakes. I would recommend Iyengar Yoga, it is very technical and progressive. You'll get the (1 min or so) chanting and the Om; but otherwise you're more likely to have a very attentive teacher. I've been to India so now I can attest first hand they hand out teacher training certificates of dubious value to just about anyone who's willing to pay for a three month course. I do not mean to say that these teachers are bad, many of them are very good and love what they do; but they don't have the kind of foundations that you'll get from styles like iYengar where it takes a lot more training to receive the certification (several years, at least). By the way another sign to look for is class duration. If you want to feel the benefits both mental and physical, a decent Yoga class is about one hour and a half; not just one hour. Plenty of time to warm up and cool down in the corpse pose at the end. Research suggests yoga can counteract fibromyalgia - EratiK - 2010-10-15 Yoga can also be a bit like RTK actually. I practiced by myself for about 3 months, and the benefits were really there. All it takes is a 2 tatami mat flat surface, and a good hatha yoga book. A word of advice: avoid cessions longer than 2 hours, or you'll burn out. Then again, by that criterion most "yoga" practiced outside of India isn't actually yoga. |
