Does anyone know if something like this exists yet? An app that would show pop-up translations of any Japanese word you tapped on a webpage would be awesome.

I've tried searching, but so far I've been unable to find a program such as this.

I know there is a rikaichan browser for the iPad but I'm not sure if it works on the iPhone. I would think there just isn't enough screen real estate. Check out their site though. http://longweekendmobile.com/get-our-apps/rikai-browser-for-ipad/

Awesome, thanks for the link kerosan :-). I have the iPod touch 4g so I think the resolution will be adequate but i need to wait for a jailbreak before I can try this.

Any others? :-)

Hi Guys. Thanks for sharing Rikai Browser with everyone.

I'd like to let you know that a new version is coming very soon that adds iPhone and iPod Touch support. The new version was sent to Apple today and will be available (hopefully) next week.

See http://longweekendmobile.com/blog for the most up to date info.

Thanks for your interest and good luck in your Japanese studies!

We're not prophets - just geeks who like iOS devices Smile.

While you're at it, you should check out Japanese Flash, our vocabulary study tool. It has the full EDICT dictionary (searchable), and we've included cross-referenced Tanaka Corpus example sentences, so for everyone (like me) who learns best in-context, it's great.

27 and counting five-star ratings on the App Store: http://japaneseflash.com/

Oh, and we're right here. We don't make abandoned apps - we're proud of the product and plan to make it more Awesome in 2011.

Personally I'd just want something like Stardict for the iDevices; I think I read that Touchdict is a non-program specific pop-up dictionary that lets you use Stardict dictionaries, but might have problems with unspaced text. If it allows for clipboard scanning like Stardict does though, I'd be happy.

What i'm really after is an app that would work in iPod mode so you can look words up in lyrics whilst the song is playing. That would be gold.

Does the iPod app display the lyrics while a song is playing? That's cool. How do you get it to do that?

iPod Touch and iPhone do (not sure about the others). In iTunes, right click on the song and click "get info" then navigate to the "lyrics" tab. From there just paste the lyrics into the box and then the lyrics will appear on the screen when the song plays on the device.

Use lyrics master to easily get all the lyrics to all your songs in iTunes aswell! Mega helpful.

In addition, the lastest subs2srs can put the segment of dialogue into the lyrics section. The iPhone and iTouch just displays the text.

Now if they can update the player so it uses the time stame (.lrc format) to display the lyrics line by line in a larger font, that'd be super.

Is it possible to use the iPhone "copy/select" on the text? If so, then it shouldn't be hard to copy/paste into a dictionary or study app that would look up the word.

You can use lrc lyrics on the iPhone with various apps, for example LRC Player.

A few weeks ago... there was a post about a rikaichan like app finally being submitted to the app store for the iphone... unfortunately I can't seem to find that post...

anybody remember what the app is called?

Thanks :-)

edit: Oh god i suck.... its in this thread... >.<

OK so the maker of this Wakaru app joined the forums just to promote his app, but I don't think he should be punished for it because it's FREAKING AWESOME!!!!

http://www.youtube.com/user/WakaruApp
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wakaru/id351047145?mt=8

Only $1.99 it has an inbuilt browser and ebook reader and EDICT dictionary which works like Rikaichan.

It also saves all your looked up words to a study list to you can import them to Anki afterwards!!

EDIT: This post is about Wakaru, not Rikaibrowser - did I not make that clear??

Well, it's not the ONLY reason we joined the forum. We're Japanese students as well -- we just want to know what people want.

Thanks for the great compliment though!!

rikaichan like app for iphone? - Blahah - 2010-12-20

OK sorry for the slander, we get a lot of app developers making an account just to post about their app. Great that you guys are learning Japanese too - does that mean you'll be listening to suggestions from the community for continued development of the app?

This just joined Anki on the quick launch bar of my iPhone - who the hell needs the 'phone' function anyway??

We were Japanese learners well before we learned how to make iPhone apps (by a margin of about 8-10 years for 2 of us) -- it's amazing to go back and think about how much easier it would have been to get started if we'd had the tools that are available today.... I guess that's "progress".

As for your other comment, yeah, I want to use this forum as an opportunity to get ideas from people as well as to what they're looking for - for example, Rikai Browser could do so much more than it currently does (e.g. export to our flashcard app, or to Anki) -- we literally have more ideas than time, so it's a matter of finding out what other people want too...

Please make a music player where I can look up words in the lyrics while the song is playing. The standard ipod function doesn't allow you to select any text from the lyrics which really sucks. If I had the "wakaru" functionality in the ipod app, it would be the greatest thing ever.

You mentioned that before. Why not lobby Apple for this to allow word selection (e.g. select & copy)? Apple is pretty good at responding to this kind of feedback if you file it as a "bug".

Of course, the word still wouldn't look up automatically - you'd have to fast-app switch to a dictionary or otherwise and handle it there.

Are the words in kana? Kanji? Can you get a screen capture to show us? I may have another way of doing it.

rikaichan like app for iphone? - juniperpansy - 2010-12-20

Has anyone used the the iphone version? First I want to say to the iPhone screen may be too small for this concept to work well.... but

(Forgive my brutal honesty but) I found this app to be a complete and utter piece of garbage that should've never been released in the first place.

I have a ipod touch 4g but...

1) if you have it in portrait mode, the icons on the bar at the top overlap. You only get you through to see 3 LETTERS in the url field. Good luck if you mistyped something. There's no way for you to know since you can actually see what you're typing
2) often the scrolling freezers is very slow. It's the only program I've ever used on my ipod touch that made me think my touch screen was broken....
3) there is some stupid ad that always covers up the webpage. Interesting though as half of the ad cannot be seen as it is off the screen so it is impossible for the user even though it's being advertised...
4) if you want to see the definition of the word you have to click through an EXTRA COMPLETELY USELESS SCREEN telling you you can study even though school is out...WTF

Long_weekend I appreciate the effort... but why was this even released in its current form? This program by far as the worst usability of any iphone app I've ever downloaded...

I don't recognise any of those things, are you sure you've downloaded the right app? The version I have doesn't have any ads and has an easy swipe-to-turn as well as a decent size url bar...

edit: oh and there is no extra screen to click for the word definition - it just slides onto the screen from the bottom.

^^^^^IN THE WAKARU APP

Your pictures don't work but... you do realize this thread is about the rikai browser and not the wakaruapp, right?

No it isn't - it's about apps which have rikaichan like functionality. Although it seems Long_weekend thought I was talking about rikaibrowser when I was talking about wakaru, and that you were talking about rikaibrowser too!

Sorry Long_weekend, I was complimenting Wakaru, not Rikaibrowser. And sorry juniperpansy, because Long_weekend responded to my comments about Wakaru I thought he was also a dev of it, which led to the recent confusion.

juniperpansy,

Thanks for you interest and for using Rikai Browser. You are awesome.

First, I want to confirm that your issues are indeed with Rikai Browser? We take quality seriously and are proud of our products. If there are issues, I would like to fix them.

We have not been able to replicate what you are describing here, so I'd like to get some more details to resolve the issue. I will send you a mail asking for some more details of your set up (which you likely don't want to share with the whole forum).

Again, thanks for using our products and I hope to have this resolved for you as soon as possible.
