I don´t think I said enough about the way I understand it for you to say as much. In fact, you repeated the only things I really did say on the topic.

... why am I even posting this? Defend your nerd pride! Yaaaaaar! Hahaha.
"The way you explain it, it sounds like it is electricity(electrons or whatever) but it's all photons... from radio waves, to visible light, to x rays and gamma rays."

Whatever

This is my favorite internet thread of all time.

Also, knowing about science = sexy.

Science - please help!!! - Hashiriya - 2010-09-17

Aijin, just exactly how THICK are your glasses?!?!

Science - please help!!! - Aijin - 2010-09-17

Let's just say I had to steal the lenses from the Very Large Telescope in Chile to make them.

(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Very_Large_Telescope see, I'm not making things up, it really IS called that)

Hmm. I think you should've been the one to post a cache of kanji-neuroscience links.

Everything about the gritty sciencish details I half-learned by watching the drama series ReGenesis and then studying the background facts at http://www.ontariogenomics.ca/outreach/regenesis .. what I remember now is that Anki might've been useful.

Nowhere does that imply that electrons cannot produce electromagnetic radiation.....

It´s not like I said, "Yahahahaha science and Bohr´s model are both wrong; electromagnetic radiation cannot be produced by electrons jumping energy levels!!!"

Seriously.

Lmao, that sounds like a name that I would have given it

my head hurts.
Lol, if you can understand the crazy biochem stuff you guys are talking about, you can understand anything. Just keep in mind how many 4-year degrees worth of concepts you are trying to self study in a relatively short space of time. It may take some time. Smile

Keep in mind one of the most active uses of applied physics this days is in medical scanners and cancer treatment stuff. The physics (and subsequent computer post-processing) behind fMRI and PET scanners is hardcore.

IceCream Wrote:cool Aijin!! Yeah, i think the psychology bits are more interesting too. But i totally get how knowing the mechanics of everything helps!
don't suppose you were studying this stuff in Japanese were you? If so, please recommend your textbooks!!!
I studied it all in English so I don't know what Japanese textbooks are available unfortunately. As far as I know, a lot of the neuroscience texts available in Japanese are just translations of textbooks/studies done in English though.

If you find the combination of neurology and psychology interesting though I'd suggest some of the books by Oliver Sacks. He's sort of the rock star of neurology.

It's great that you have such curiosity and lust for knowledge, but yeah a lot of these things are 4-year degrees in themselves Tongue just having a short paragraph understanding of things should be more than enough. The why of everything is more for specialists in the fields, and even then with science if you ask "why" enough the answer eventually ends up as, "...because that's how it is!"

I'd second that - the classic is "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat", and more recently "Musicophilia" is excellent. Eloquent and insightful, and the cases are so remarkable that the details are engrained in your memory for ever after reading them.

I was just reading this the other day, an interview with Oliver Sacks on his new book/hallucinations due to his tumour: http://mindhacks.com/2010/09/01/an-opthamologist-on-mars/

So basically developing a tumor behind your retina is a great excuse to smoke pot.

To tie this into Japanese, one of my professors once jokingly told the class, "There is only one true way to test fluency in a foreign language. Get high and see if you can read a book. The number of pages you can get through with actually following the plot is the indicator of your fluency."

Part of me wants to suggest introducing this as part of our assessment at work... but somehow i don't think it will fly...

Science - please help!!! - Thora - 2010-09-19

hmm, I'm not fluent in English
