Heisig Dreams? - decamer0n - 2007-07-04

dear god, i think i need professional help!

lately, i have been extremely busy, but on a serious roll with heisig, so i'm taking about an hour and a half each day and sweeping through 50 kanji. my review rates are still variable between 85%-95%, so something is clicking in. i think the really hard mental work i did early on has paid off: spending a long time carefully forming images for each kanji. I have probably borrowed less than 5 stories from other users. so now those muscles i built up are really flexing.

anyway, last night i worked all day, finishing work and then dinner around 10pm, but i still really wanted to get in two heisig lessons. so i blew through them right before going to bed. and this morning i just woke up from intense dreams of making heisig stories...

the whole thing's a bit fuzzy, because, you know, dreams tend to be disjointed, but i was having a very long, intense double mental layer dream (a bit like lucid dreaming). on one layer i was trying my hand at making stories that wrap up RTK1 and 2 together (haven't done that in real life) and on the other mental layer, i was simultaneously living out those stories. bizzare.

bizzare. at some point i got into an altercation with an adolescent Tori Amos, (i think she was napping in the spot i had picked for my afternoon nap?), and she attacked me and bit my crotch (ouch!). in the dream i knew in the back of my mind that i was one of her non-immediate family members, so in hindsight, this must have been a story for "uncle" (though i certainly didn't use anything like this for uncle in real life).

that was just one more memorable little piece of a very long and varied dream sequence. am i going mad? you know, i have tried very hard to avoid the violence and sex that tends to show up in a lot of the shared stories, going for simple stories that capture an image as directly related to the meaning of the keyword as possible. maybe such repression has created a split heisig method personality? haha.

i think i will write a screen play after finishing RTK1. it will be something along the lines of the movie "7" in which a serial killer goes through the heisig method by creating his stories as a series of gruesome murders. the working title is "2042: Sign of the Snake."

don't worry, this isn't a real cry for help. i think i'm still pretty sane. but i do still have about 250 kanji to go...

I'm not sure how his name is pronounced (I call him Dr. Hellsing, myself), but the topic title could be considered a pun.

I have, too, suffered from a similar ailment, although it was not as, uh, intense (the only occurrence of Tori Amos in my own archives is related to a cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit"). This topic will probably be purged soon in order to avoid alienating any forum newcomers.

By the way, that is an awesome movie title. Plot, not so much.

I was doing reviews on this website in my sleep last night ;-)

Nowadays, all my dreams are in shades of blue and yellow...

You know when you're really tired and trying to sleep but your brain is still mulling over problems and they begin to make less and less sense? I've definitely found the Heisig approach creeping into that pre-sleep state as I try to relate all the elements of the problem together in a bizarre but memorable way. Actual Heisig dreams are yet to come....

If that's the case, it's probably just as well! I do occasionally wonder what the long-term psychological effect of having over 2000 somewhat surreal stories/images stored in my brain might be.... So Decamer0n, I sympathise with you and anyone else suffering (hopefully mild) Heisig-induced delusions. Big Grin

If you don't, your story wasn't good enough anyway Wink

I don't know if it had anything to do with Heisig (I bet it did!), but I had a dream filled with kanji last night. Big Grin

Had a spooky dream last night....involving Nukemarine's avator......yikes!

I went to post this in the "So, do you remember your dreams?" thread.....and the last poster was.....Nukemarine. Smile

Perhaps I need to spend more time on other interests for awhile.

That and your bedroom has lovely curtains.

My kanji dreams are so dull. Instead of vivid kanji stories, it's just me writing learned kanji. Boring, but a little extra review in my sleep can't be hurting, can it?

Whow, before yesterday I was with a 38o fever all the day. I could not set my mind of the "emotion" and "beguile" kanjis. At least I find them ones of the easiest to remember now.

Not really Heisig related, but I once had a dream (in English) about a girl who liked Nana Kitade, and I saw "Kitade Nana" in kanji (no idea if it was correct, I can't even tell you what the kanji for her name are, now).

I also tend to 'review' sentences (more like 'replay') in my head when I'm stressed, or lately kanji stories. ("What was the story for "Inquire? ... - *repeats story*") Or random sentences (usually the longer sentences), so when I'm anxious I'll think something like "人間が、動物から病気をもらうことは、まれではあるがありうる。" and just repeat it over and over to myself. It helps to focus on something familiar when your stressed Wink I think it's kinda funny.

Also, once I tried to sleep but couldn't, and I couldn't remember what a certain kanji was (I can't remember which it was, but I kept repeating the keyword in my mind). Eventually I got up and checked the kanji in my notebook, I just had to, before I could finally sleep.
