Who's 'they'? Because I usually say わら for straw items.

one piece - errtu - 2010-08-28

they are the guys that write the manga

Not sure what you mean but 藁(わら) is "straw" and 麦 is "wheat".
Straw hat is called 麦わら帽子 in Japanese because they are usually made of wheat straw.

Thanks, that's interesting. I didn't know what kind of straw they used, but I thought they were called sugegasa, at least the conical ones worn by farmers and such. But I haven't seen any manga that discusses straw hats at any length.

You can see the hat they're referring to right in the logo.

The kind of straw hat the protagonist of One Piece wears is called 麦わら帽子 (むぎわらぼうし). The kanji for わら is 藁, but it's rarely used. This is one of those kanji the average native speaker can read without a problem but can't write without looking up in a dictionary or using a computer. It's definitely too obscure a kanji for the target audience of the manga.

Sugegasa (菅笠) is a conical hat like a corn which kind of looks like an Asian straw hat. I don't think kids these days know what it's called unless they were grown up in rural areas. I don't know what it's made of, but it's slightly different from the kind of 藁 you use for 麦わら帽子. I'm guessing すげ (菅) is the name of the plant.

Ah, I wasn't familiar with this manga. I figured that the subject was on soliciting 'one piece' of advice, or referred to a discussion about one piece of clothing.

there you go, that´s the answer. very nice. so the straw kanji should be used but it is not cause it is not customary. but the word is still there.

and it´s wheat straw, nice nice, thanks man

Should be used!? What does that mean? How you are supposed to use language is established by what is customary.

I think he meant that the Kanji is proper, but it's not used because it's customary.
