How to handle same meanings? - loverkanji - 2010-08-27

I have a big problem when srsing vocabulary, there are many words that have the same meaning so I confuse my answers. For example:
今日 = today
本日 = today
I do both kanji->meaning and meaning->kanji, and a problem comes up when i see a card with the question "today" but i don't know how to answer.
Anybody can help me? or maybe tell me what you do or how you avoid this ?

Don't do English -> Japanese?

Or at least don't do "single English word -> Japanese"; there's really not much point to that.

本日 should really say "This day".

the reason I do English to Japanese is to learn how to write the words in kanji.
Should I completely ignore English to Japanese then ?

今日 is actually translated as today, this day.
本日 is just today.
it is just a shared anki card that I got, btw.

Go Kana -> Kanji then. Avoid translating from English to Jap.

Go mentat!
Definitely go Kana - Kanji for production! Smile

Doing kana to kanji eventually leads to the same problem

Its just an awkward problem. No perfect solution. Could put stuff that's the same on the same card.

Avoiding English to Japanese would be a bad idea for me. If I want to be able to recall the word when talking I usually need to know it E -> J way. But then again, you only really need to say something one way, so I pass as long as I know one answer to the card.

I think if you start depending on english keywords to lead to your japanese meaning words it's a bad habit.

What I do is, I don't test meaning. If you have finished RTK, then you can somewhat guess what most words mean, specially with some context; and it will become even easier as your vocabulary increases.

I only test かな → 漢字 and backwards. My vocab cards do contain definitions and example sentences, but, most times, I don't even read them. The format is: kana + pitch accent + definition → kanji + couple of sentences.
