Hi everyone. I love typing in Japanese (あの。。。分かるものだけど。。。)on my PC.
I have it set as the default. When I push Shift+leftALT, it switches to Japanese typing.
However... it's really annoying because when I push shift+leftalt, it defaults to the 'Alphanumeric' typing instead of 'Hiragana' so nothing really changes. I have to go to my language bar and change it to Hiragana every time I want to do it. It's really pointless.
I tried poking around the settings but couldn't figure out how to make it default to Hiragana. In fact, I wouldn't mind removing the 'alphanumeric' option altogether.
Actually, I'd like to remove that as well as the 'half width' かたかな and 'half width' alphanumeric. Why would I want my kanas to overlap? That's so dumb you can't even read.
But mainly I just want to default to Hiragana. Can anyone help?

Are you using a PC? Try pressing Ctrl+Capslock after pressing Alt+Shift.

Once the Japanese keyboard is selected (through Alt-Shift, e.g.) you can change the input mode to hiragana by pressing Ctrl-CapsLock. That just goes TO hiragana; i.e. it's not a toggle.
Alt-CapsLock goes to katakana.
Shift-CapsLock goes to half-width alphanumeric.

That's helpful, thanks. Too bad there's not a way to just make it one step instead of two. But that helps a lot!

Alt+` also toggles between alpha mode and the most recent Japanese mode.

I've found that "alt" + "~" switches between romaji and kana quickly. You have to be in the japanese keyboard mode so like other have said just use "alt" + "shift" if the "alt""~" didn't work.

Yeah, it's way more convenient if you just delete the English keyboard outright. It's not like you need it; the Japanese keyboard defaults to direct input anyway, and if it's the only one you have then all you have to do is press "alt" + "~" to switch back and forth between English and Japanese.

Really? Will it have any adverse impacts on inputting fields and stuff?
Like, I know AJATT and whatnot, but I do need to function in English. I'm in high school, I have AP US History this year, etc.
Will 'alphanumeric' be exactly the same as having an english keyboard?

Yes, direct input is exactly the same as the English keyboard. I mean, you've got the Japanese keyboard installed already, right? Switch to it and check for yourself. I didn't delete my English keyboard for any reason related to AJATT, I did it because it's more convenient with no negative repercussions.

@zachandhobbes -- Oh please, Macs can right-click just as well as PCs can. Except, if you have a trackpad instead of a mouse, it's "double finger-click," which, I guess is discriminatory towards people who have chopped off 4 of their fingers...
@Anna B -- I don't think it was necessarily offensive as it was useless and didn't contribute anything to the conversation. Then again, I'm not too much better in this thread

Of course I know that, I spend too much time on Team Fortress 2 forums where it's more of an obvious joke ("Macs can't Mouse2! HAHA you can't use -special ability-" etc etc).

question: Now that I have switched to the Japan keyboard only, how do I switch easily from hiragana to katakana without going to the little menu? ALT+Caps doesn't seem to do the trick anymore.

You can convert the text you're typing to katakana by pressing F7 or hitting spacebar and selecting the option written in katakana. You shouldn't need to switch your IME into katakana mode unless you're typing large chunks of text in katakana.

That's nothing. On Linux you can program a self writing pen that reads your mind and selects the proper kanji accordingly

The Alt+Shift is gonna save me a lot energy (it's important to preserve the wrist).
