Gyms in Kyoto (specifically Shijou) - MeisterLlama - 2010-08-11 I'm gonna be living in Shijou in Kyoto for about a month, and I was wondering what would be the cheapest option for a gym with a decent amount of equipment? I don't mind commuting if the total cost including tickets comes out cheaper. Also, is it possible for me to eat healthily here? I'm trying to bulk up, but my budget isn't that big, so I'm wondering if there is any place where I can get relatively large amounts of healthy food for cheap. It doesn't seem like it... I'm in a hotel, so I can't cook for myself. Gyms in Kyoto (specifically Shijou) - Anna B - 2010-08-11 MeisterLlama Wrote:Also, is it possible for me to eat healthily here? It doesn't seem like it...I've spent a lot of time foraging for healthy food in Kyoto, although bulking up has not been one of my goals. Department store basements are vast food malls of individual vendors of decent, often cheap take-away prepared foods. My favorite is Takashimaya, conveniently located on Shijoudouri with a train stop right outside the basement door. There's just tons of stuff, and one vendor (Souzai, I think) with amazing salads. I mention salads because IME they're rare in Japan beyond the iceberg lettuce/hard tomato wedge thing. Then there's おばんざい (Obanzai - the sign out front is in hiragana). About two large blocks East of Karasumadouri on Oikedouri and then a block North. (Oikedori is the first stop North of Shijoudouri on the Karasuma (N-S) subway line.) It has an all-you-can eat buffet of insanely delicious home-style mostly, but not entirely, plant-based food. Both brown and white rice, miso soup, small range of fresh salad ingredients , plus severeal bean, soy, and vegetable dishes. Lunch and dinner the same except dinner always has fish, and costs about 50% more. There's also a cheap and healthy Indian restaurant on Higashioujidouri several blocks North of Kyoto University, but it's farther afield and its name escapes me at the moment. In a pinch there's always convenience stores with hard-boiled eggs, onigiri, soba, vegetable sides, etc. Cheap, quality varies. Good luck!
