Beginner. How am I doing ? - TyroneLove - 2010-07-31

Hello everyone ! (First, sorry if my english is not exactly great)

I'm a beginning japanese student. I've only started a month ago and spend around 2hrs on it everyday. I've decided to start this topic because although I sometimes feel like I learn pretty fast, other times I have to revise much more before advancing or simply get a bit lazy and waste too much time. Other times I'm too hasty and burn through my courses too quick and the material ends up being confused in my head wich leads to more time wasted. All of this can make me doubt of my learning abilities. Those doubts are probably commong among new language students but as I can't ask about it to anyone I know, I'm asking you.

Here's approximately what I've learned in my first month of study : the 2 kana, of course, up to kanji 400 in Rtk, the numbers, days of the weeks and of the months, the time, family names, the pronouns, the forms (affirmative, negative, past, past negative of both formal and dictionnary forms + -te/-de forms) of around 60 verbs, around a 100 nouns, 30 adjectives and 50 adverbs, and the particles.

So simply put, how do you think I'm doing so far ?

At such an early stage it is hard to say. When one says they have learned something, it can mean many things. You have learned all of the things listed above, but how is your command over all of these forms? Can you recognize them and use them spontaneously? Or are you simply aware of them? It's two different things, right? At this point it is more important to examine your methods than your progress. That said, I think if you continue to put 2 hrs a day into your studies, you will be successful.

Thank you for your reply. I try to watch at least one anime episode every day and I do understand more and more as I learn new stuff. As for my method, I use a lesson book together with an exercize book and do a lesson one day and the relating exercizes the follwing day. Then I learn 20 new kanji with Rtk, review them once using flashcards I make myself and review the 20 cards from the day before. I review the new ones again in the evening and the following day, then I mostly use this site for older cards. Every couple of days I use Anki with Tae Kim's guide and the Japanese Core 2000. I also have a vocabulary notepad where I write every new word I come across in my lessons and Anki from which I read the last 3-4 pages at least twice a day.
