I've already made an an archive of Japanese Core. Is there anything else worth downloading now while we still can?

chinese stuff?

smart.fm closing public API - ahibba - 2010-07-02

What does it mean?

We can no longer download from it with Anki's plugin?

Yes, good thing I already downloaded all necessary vocab lists Smile

Whilst it's probably a good idea to backup the core series, as long as Smart.fm keeps goals working with lists of items and sentences, you will be able to spider the site with a script and download all the media/items/sentences. You can use DownThemAll on any goal at the moment, and this will continue to be the case even after they disable the API. The Anki script can be modified to work through the web interface instead of the API.

It's not unimaginable that they could change their T&C to specifically prevent spidering.

And I wouldn't blame them for it. Its their platform and they can do whatever they want with it.

Importing goals from smart.fm into Anki doesn't contribute anything to that particular community and is just leeching of other peoples hard work. But I confess I still did it Smile

With that said, resolve will we see similar functionalities in AnkiOnline in the future (paid or free)? Maybe some sort of collaboration on public/shared decks etc.?

After reading the site it seems they are going to relaunch the API at a later date once they have made firm decisions about their business plan. From various staff postings it also seems they're planning to go for the classic 'pro' and 'free' account dichotomy.

Iknow (smart.fm was a name almost universally reviled when it changed over) sold itself on users create content for the purpose of sharing it. I have still been creating lists over the last year, but have really grown tired of their hypocrisy.

smart.fm closing public API - Groot - 2010-07-02

I've been planning to pull all of Core 2000/6000 into Anki, including especially the audio and images, possibly by using the premade decks that are already available as shared downloads. I've been delaying only because my PC died, and I'm waiting for a new one to arrive next week. Is that still a viable plan? Or should I grab all those premade decks now onto my laptop?

I suppose the alternative is to construct my own deck by downloading Cangy's file and somehow putting it into excel, then weeding out fields I don't need? I don't really understand how to do this, nor do I understand how to get the media. Do I need to worry about it? If so, is there a step-by-step guide somewhere?

smart.fm closing public API - arch9443 - 2010-07-02

Does the API closing only pertain to downloading stuff from them into Anki and the like or does it mean we won't be able to use smart.fm at all. Like doing the core series with their iKnow app will we still be able to do that?

I did get an Anki deck all ready and got the sound files from what Cangy posted, but I rather like the iKnow app way of learning the vocab. Because if I do it with anki everytime I see a new vocab it's an automatic fail, because I've not seen it before. I don't know, but that just seems silly to me.

smart.fm closing public API - Blahah - 2010-07-02

@Groot it's fine, you should you use setup posted by Cangy in the first link (download the .txt file and both the sets of audio, then import the .txt file into Anki as a deck). Smart.fm closing the API for a while won't stop anyone being able to use stuff that was previously imported. In this case Cangy has already imported all the important information from Smart.fm, so nothing they do can ever take that away.

@arch9443 you will still be able to study using the iKnow app as before.

But hasnt this been done already?
I am doing Core 2000 steps now complete with audio and pictures, and theres also the whole Core 6000 with audio and pictures..

Or are you planning to do something different?

Where?

I think Kaeru means the shared decks for each step of Core 2000 and Core 6000. There are about 20 of those, right, with 400 facts or so each? One deck for each step, right? Or did you mean something else, Kaeru?

I downloaded a couple of those "Core step-decks" using my old PC (before it died), and they were pretty much what I wanted, though I suspended most of the cards because I wanted only word-recognition (J-E) and sentence recognition (J-E). I guess my main question about those "step decks" is whether I really want 20 little decks, or whether I'd prefer a single, larger deck. Kaeru, are you using them as one-deck-per-step, or are you merging them into larger decks? My eventual aim is to put this stuff on my iPad, and maybe it would be easier to do that with the smaller one-step decks?

I'd been interested in Cangy's version because, as I understand it, it's sorted by Kanji Odyssey 2000 order, or at least some of it is. Maybe just 2000 entries are sorted that way?

This link does not seem to point to any archived audio files, unless I am missing something.

I have been working through RTK first, but maybe i need to get some sort of anki deck set up for when the api goes away.

smart.fm closing public API - Asriel - 2010-07-03

igomadness -
The spreadsheet cangy has put together links to both the audio for the vocab and sentences. Everything should work fine, unless they change the way the audio is stored on their server. It's unrelated to the API.

smart.fm closing public API - pm215 - 2010-07-03

Plus that webpage has links for downloading zipfiles of the audio from mediafire anyway ("for local sound download...")

smart.fm closing public API - igomadness - 2010-07-03

Ahh, I somehow missed that. thanks both.

smart.fm closing public API - Groot - 2010-07-03

So kaeru, did you download 20 separate Core decks, and then merge them? I'm still debating whether it's workable do have that many Anki decks, or whether to merge them.

smart.fm closing public API - kaeru - 2010-07-03

Groot: I am doing them one by one but I have just gotten started, am on my second core 2000 deck right now, I plan to merge the first with the second when im "finished" with both and continue to do so with every deck, meaning:

1 and 2 finished - I merge
when 3 is finished I merge with 1 and 2(which is now 1 deck) and so forth.

smart.fm closing public API - Groot - 2010-07-03

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks!

I might try that too. The main issue for me is that lately I've been doing all my Anki reviews on the iPad, but Anki for the iPad doesn't yet support mergers and other fancy deck-management features. So I'd occasionally have to resync with a laptop or PC to do the merging, then fuss with re-sending the new media. I'm worried I'll mess that up if I follow your method.

I could merge them all into one at the start, then transfer that mega-deck to the iPad, but then I've heard there can be trouble transferring huge decks like that. So, still not sure what to do.

smart.fm closing public API - Blahah - 2010-07-03

Groot, just download NukeMarine's shared deck from Anki on a desktop client, download the media files and put them in a dropbox public folder, use the Anki custom media directory plugin to point to that folder, then download the deck on your iPad. Voila - full Core2000+6000 deck with audio.

smart.fm closing public API - Groot - 2010-07-03

Thanks! I think I already have tried nukemarine's deck, and while it's very handy, I don't think it includes images, does it? Also, it doesn't have the simpleone-word-only cards that you get with the step-decks, does it? What can I say, I'm fussy. ;-)

I just got really scared when I checked for updates to the smart.fm importer plugin and heard about this. I tried importing anyway just to be sure and to my relief, everything was still working.

So what happened? Did they really close anything?
