I went with an android deevice since I need a phone ( having a smartphone is GREAT ) does the music playing I want, acts as a phone, apps like ankidroid for studying on the go, and usually you can get one for pretty darn cheap on a phone contract.
If you don't have a need for that however, the most COST effective would probably be an old laptop or a used ipod touch.

Question about this:
When I do RtK reps (not on vocab yet), I write the Kanji down before I push the answer button.
Do you guys not do that? Or when you are using your portable devices you just skip it?

If this isn't accessible at a given opportunity I just review my other decks instead, or if they're finished, trace the kanji in the air or on a random surface.

It's built into the anki app, though I guess you could have 2 apps open, but it'd be fiddly.

By the way..do you know how to make the Freda's dictionary work? I don't understand in which format the dict file should be! it supports a strange thing named slovodict or something! But there are no japanese dictionaries. And I don't understand what kind of a format it wants.

I have ankidroid on my htc hero, and started using it yesterday. However, the cards in anki droid appear within less time than in my computer.
For example, I studied in both devices yesterday (same reviews, same new cards), and for today in my computer I had around 150 reviews whereas in my droid I had around 230. Is there anyway to put them "equal"? It would be so great and sooo useful.
Oh and btw, is there anyway to put audio working in ankidroid? I have some cards with audio.
