Happy end (written in all-hiragana: はっぴいえんど)is one of the few japanese bands that really remains after months for me. Can keep on listening to it. Kaze wo atsumete (風をあつめて) is their most famous song, as featured on the lost in translation soundtrack.
The associated acts of that band are pretty cool too, like the sadistic mica band. But all old music, lol.

After a long time of searching through the wastelands referred to as Japanese music, I've found a couple awesome bands. Boris is one of my favorite bands of all time, and The Mad Capsule Markets are awesome as well.

As someone who listened to a lot of music of all forms before becoming interested in Japanese culture, I can safely and without a doubt say Japan produces far and away the worst music around. It's all just so...bad. Between shitty noise rock, metal, and j-pop you have to wonder why it all exists. They do have a few good post rock bands like Mono, but sadly there are no vocals. But if you actually have standards and a brain and are looking for good Japanese music, definitely check out Boris and The Mad Capsules.

Don't agree, NO, never will, impossible.

First> Japanese hip hop kicks ass.

2. Not to mention the GREAT Electronica, which is an ineffable experience.
http://forum.koohii.com/showthread.php?tid=6811

3. Post rock, electronica + rock mix ( miki furukawa, supercar) + tokyo jihen, shiina ringo
Some good stuff from Quruli, people in the box etc.

4. Quality pop like chara, kokia, rurutia...

Listen to those artists and try to say that Japan doesn't produce an awesome lot of AWESOME music.

And to people who like different genres, I'm sure that you will find something good, I just know it!

The genres and artists I wrote about are my taste of music, I spent a great lot of my time on finding good music, and so can anyone.

I second jettyke. How are you searching for music? If I have a band I like I usually look them up on amazon.co.jp and look at the 'see what other customers bought' bit.

My favourite band is サカナクション. I think they're electro-something? I suck at music genres.

Anyone likes Salyu? She sings songs written by Kobayashi Takeshi, pretty
well-known himself. Her stage name comes from the french "Salut!", but she's
100% Japanese. She really has an unique voice, strong and powerful.

風街ろまん and はっぴいえんど (self titled) are two of the best albums ever IMO; them and Rip Slyme are probably my favourite Japanese bands. As jettyke said, Japanese hip-hop is great, and although I think J-Pop is for the most part rubbish, you occasionally come across a gem.

I'll have to check out some of that Electronica, I've heard a few songs previously and they were pretty awesome.

Yes! That's one of the electronica bands I've heard, they're awesome.

I wonder why, but I listened to 2 albums she made, and at first I liked it, but

it's not the kind of music that I would replay more than 10 times...

In comparison, I wouldn't be surprised if I have listened to most of Tokyo Jihen's songs for over
100 times.

Her singing in this video is really fine, but that half talking guy is just terrible lol :d

I look for artists / music similar to 徳永英明 (Tokunaga Hideaki) and 武満 徹 (Toru Takemitsu).

徳永英明 -

武満 徹

I would love to hear some suggestions from you guys. Smile

I heard this on the radio today and enjoyed it:

You might too. (And if not, you might enjoy the remix that you should be able to find from the video suggestions on the right...)

I'm mostly into Bump of Chicken and similar Jpop/rock at the moment. I get a bit of replay out of them, but if you don't like pop rock in English then you might not like them.

Otherwise, I've listened to a bit of Rip Slyme and I found Orange Range and Shina Ringo quite good in the day.

Thanks Jettyke, I really dig Tokyo Jihen. They're kinda crazy
- in a good way!

But if you like avant-garde, Salyu has recently gone crazy;
you might like this (I don't!):

How about the yellow dress?

don't forget 凛として時雨 if you're after something like the Japanese equivalent to The Fall Of Troy.

Yeah, I also like サカナクション. They kinda filled the void for me since Supercar disbanded a long time ago. Lately, my new favorite has been iLL, which is Nakako's current project.

Idk if you did already but get rid of all your L1 songs and only have Japanese songs. Your taste quickly adjust to find the value in Japanese songs. I couldn't get myself to do the switch until i took all the Lil wayne Jay-z eminem etc. off my ipod and left only DaizyStripper Gackt RipSlyme Ai Otsuka etc. Now I enjoy probably 2/3 of my japanese songs. I need to get more Hip hop I should look through that thread.

You might be going a bit too far if you're getting rid of all your native language songs for Japanese ones. Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to devote your entire life to Japanese to get good at it.

But, I would delete Jay-Z and Lil Wayne for reasons unrelated to Japanese learning Tongue

Seriously, I can't understand why someone would do that. My music collection is far too precious for me to just erase about 75% of it. It's not like listening to songs in English damages your Japanese ability.

Well...time damages your Japanese ability unless you spend your time on Japanese.
So in a sense you give away your time for something else (English songs) and it indirectly damages your ability Big Grin haha

People do it cos khatz said they should.

To me it's a glaring error with the AJATT system - you're meant to replace your media (movies, music, tv shows) with Japanese equivalents, but problem is there *aren't* equivalents for alot of Western output.

I don't think listening to Japanese music affects my language ability at all anyway, as I tend to ignore lyrics or listening to instrumental bands. So meh..

Music problem - cannot find anything I like - Tykkylumi - 2011-04-03

I'm in a very similar boat... and of the Japanese music I've found that I *do* like, I tend not to like it as much as the music I would normally listen to. However, Boris and Sigh (a very good avant-garde/black metal band) are two bands I listen to regularly.

I also sometimes prefer just to listen to instrumental music, so that doesn't really matter anyway...
