You don't need to know what an adverb or a noun is in order to make a cake, a surgeon, to repair a car or your roof, nor for most things you can do in your daily life. But if you want to learn languages, then you'd better know.

The use of a couple of basic grammar terms isn't making Japanese study more confusing, but less. It's your not wanting to learn them what's giving you trouble. If you don't like the idea of learning a couple of words in your own language, then probably learning a whole new one isn't for you. If you still want to learn a new language, then the effort of learning a couple of basic notions of grammar will be trivial.

There's also more than just Tae Kim when it comes to basic grammar. Genki, UBJG, JFE, JFBP, etc can give you the basics but you might miss out on a ready made Anki deck is all.
English is my native language, It's just been a LONG time since I studied any type of grammar Tongue I probably never listened when I was studying it in school anyway. I don't need to know the grammar terms to have decent english, I imagine there are a lot of english people who don't know what an adverb or a noun is. It is however making japanese grammar study a little more confusing then it should be. If I don't understand the words he's using to describe the sentence, I'm not gonna understand the sentence either.

I tried Genki and found it incredibly boring. It was all about univerty etc. I might take a look at the others you mentioned but so far I haven't liked what I've seen.
make it fun? It should help you later on in your jp studies, giving you the edge over some ppl who don't know grammar well.

I've decided to just stop questioning myself and get on with it to be honest Tongue Instead of studying actual japanese I've been spending half of my time asking questions and googling stuff. I'm gonna go with the AJATT idea of just do it, do anything in japanese.
