Anki deck for "An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese" - twinzen - 2010-06-13

I decided to make a totally innocent thread about an Anki deck I made for this book while I was studying it. It is basically a very thorough Anki deck containg all the grammar points, with Japanese sentences, explanations and English translations. I spent a lot of time making it, so it would be a pity if I couldn't share it with the community, you never know if someone needs it for their studies, want to improve on it, or just want it for their collection. :p

This deck is based on the revised, newest edition of the book. (As of June 2010) Some fields in the spreadsheet are left empty, but this is intentional. All the information from the grammar section of the book is included.

What version of the book did you get?
Did you get the old, red/white version, or the new white/blue edition that comes with the CD packed in?

I went through this book a long time ago, but I feel like I've forgotten a lot of the vocab. It'd be nice to have another quick run through.

Cool! Thank you! But I guess I misunderstood what grammar point means. I don't think
you can learn grammar without the rules. I thought this would be just it, a nice compilation of the grammar rules in the book... Anyway, did you type this in all on your own? Whoa..I know it takes a lot of time. Wasn't there an electric version of the book?

It's the new, revised version.

I haven't heard of an electric version. And yeah, I did it all by myself as I went through the book a while ago.

Awesome! Many thanks! Big Grin
I too have the book but still have to finish other books before that one. But I can already SRS it, I just need to know the vocabulary.

Anki deck for "An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese" - Groot - 2010-06-13

As it happens, I just bought that book online a few days ago. If it's the one I'm thinking of, it's an unofficial successor to the two Genki books, which I finished last month. I haven't done much with the book yet, but I hope to start reading it this week.

Twinzen, would you be willing to share your deck with those of us who already own the book? I could send you a proof-of-purchase seal or something. Smile

Oh man that picture is awesome Wink

Thanks a lot for this. I've wanted to make a deck for IAIJ ever since I got it but always got kinda demotivated when it came to actually having to sit down and do it (awful patience, plus I had no idea how to organize it) The work's greatly appreciated.

When I import I only end up with 304 cards... does this sound right? There looks like more in the original file... I have seven fields when importing...

Anki deck for "An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese" - atylmo - 2010-06-13

@SammyB:
Did you get any errors when you imported? I did, and it only got 63 cards the first time.

I think the problem (at least for me) is the way Google Docs exports .CSVs. It doesn't add commas as placeholders for empty fields, and Anki seems to expect that based on the errors it gave me ("card has 6 fields, expected 7", etc.) After I opened it in OpenOffice and resaved it as a .CSV, it imported 308 cards. OpenOffice also put every field in quotes, if that makes a difference :/

It still didn't get all the cards though.

Anki deck for "An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese" - SammyB - 2010-06-13

Yeah I got "card has 6 fields, expected 7" for a number of them, but most of these still got imported ok... Not sure what's going on. Sad

Twinzen, you couldn't upload a "totally innocent" actual anki deck could you?

Here are two Anki files I found, but I don't know if they are the ones the OP mentioned.
Int Jap vocab
Int Jap Other

That is exactly what I wanted! Thank you! I think those are what OP mentioned because it looks like the spreadsheet that was previously available Smile

Anki deck for "An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese" - Dustin_Calgary - 2014-03-14

There is also an anki deck with just vocab I've found elsewhere, but will look at this "other" deck to see if it looks like the one described here.

Either way, thanks! Smile

While going through the textbook, I corrected the deck with the sentences/grammar explanations ("Int Jap Other" above) chapter by chapter.
AIATIJ sentences - corrected

The sentences in the original deck had quite a few typos/errors such as missing words and missing/incorrect particles. Some of the sentences were conjugated to short form whereas the book had the -masu form. I left those as they were. I also left stuff that had been written in kanji instead of the book's hiragana as I found them. I also added furigana to a small number of cards, easily removable if you don't need it. Also added a field called "extra" for my own personal notes.

Anyway, for anyone using this deck, this should save a bit of time, as the original deck has enough mistakes that you'd probably want to double-check every card with the book. The corrected deck is probably 100% correct now, if not then very, very close to it.

edit: Forgot to mention, I only looked over the field with the japanese sentences. The english probably has typos, I did correct one: "housework" was incorrectly written as "homework". The fields listing the grammar points are probably mistake-free. The fields containing the explanations presumably have typos, though it shouldn't a big deal as you'll want to read the grammar explanations straight from the book the first time anyway. After that you'll probably only be reviewing the example sentence itself for the most part. Personally, I'm unsure why the cards were typed in the first place given all the typos. Couldn't they have been simply print-screened/cut&pasted from a scanned copy? It wouldn't be 100% searchable and some kanji would be missing, but at least you'd be certain you weren't learning from incorrect sentences.
