Your favourite songs - wrightak - 2007-06-09 It's always brilliant for me when I find a Japanese song that I really like. I work out the lyrics and because I love the song, they replay over and over in my mind, which is great for building vocabulary and it's also good for pronunciation. The only problem is that I come across music I like quite rarely so I thought I'd start a thread to share good Japanese tunes. Don't know if this will be popular or not but I'll get the ball rolling with these three: レミオロメン 粉雪 (こなゆき) I bought one of the albums of these guys and it was great. They're very popular in Japan so I'd imagine a lot of people know them already. 笹川美和 (ささがわみわ) 笑 I chose this song because it's popular and it's on youtube but I actually prefer 金木犀 (きんもくせい) (toggle the old rikaichan on that badboy). She has a really distinctive voice that sounds quite folky and traditional. スピッツ ロビンソン This is going back a few years but the melody is fantastic. Really distinctive. I found the videos on youtube today but I've loved the songs for ages now. I think the videos are actually pretty unexciting and don't live up to the song at all. Anyway, I hope that these are new for some people and that they like them. I'd really like to get into some more bands/singers so please share. Your favourite songs - Herumouni - 2007-06-09 I love just about anything by Ayumi Hamasaki. Some of my most favourites are Momentum, Ourselves, Step You, Is This Love, Lady's Night, and (Miss) Understood. I also have one by スピッツ-チェリー。 Sorry I usually don't have much to say at first... Your favourite songs - fiminor - 2007-06-09 Anyone else come across a band called "Fain Days"? I seemed to run into them every time I went to Osaka and they came across as a little more interesting than the average Japanese rock band. Keep meaning to try and decipher the lyrics of the single I bought... Your favourite songs - Megaqwerty - 2007-06-09 The only Japanese songs that I ever listen to are the ones in Ouendan and Ouendan 2. On most forums, it's generally agreed that you're better off not knowing what the lyrics mean, given the fact that all the music is pop, but I'm quite fond of the actual music itself. I don't see myself "deciphering" lyrics anytime soon: even in English, my mother tongue, I hear rampant mondegreens in songs. For the longest time, I thought La La was about a girl trying to kill her boyfriend due to infidelity: I liked my lyrics more than the actual lyrics. Your favourite songs - rgravina - 2007-06-10 wrightak, that girl's (みわ) voice is amazing! Personally, I'll be happy when I can understand what Rip Slyme are saying ![]() Try these on for size: Your favourite songs - wrightak - 2007-06-11 Herumouni Wrote:I love just about anything by Ayumi Hamasaki. Which of Ayumi Hamasaki's songs would you especially recommend? fiminor Wrote:Anyone else come across a band called "Fain Days"? Not sure if you were kidding about wanting to understand their lyrics but I think if you search on the web you might be able to find them. Your favourite songs - Herumouni - 2007-06-11 wrightak Wrote:Well, I already mentioned Momentum, Endless Sorrow, Is This Love, and Step You; I'd say look for Beautiful Fighters, Fairyland, Heaven, Hanabi, Blue Bird, and Depend on You.Herumouni Wrote:I love just about anything by Ayumi Hamasaki. Your favourite songs - suffah - 2007-06-11 wrightak Wrote:Yeah, チェリー is also good. Which of Ayumi Hamasaki's songs would you especially recommend?I feel that Ayumi's albums are very front-loaded, so the first few tracks of any album are usually pretty good. My favorite Ayu album is Miss Understood, the tracks Step You, Is This Love, Heaven, and Fairlyland are great. One song missing from Heumouni's list is Evolution, her best rock single IMO. Your favourite songs - Herumouni - 2007-06-11 suffah Wrote:I don't like Evolution too much. I have about 60 of her songs right now. Some other good ones are Poker Face, Duty, End of the World, Scar, and Criminal. Inspire, And Then, Boys and Girls, Hope or Pain, Heartplace, Real Me, Seasons, Trust, A Song for XX, Friend...wrightak Wrote:Yeah, チェリー is also good. Your favourite songs - amthomas - 2007-06-11 For people that want West-coast punk rock with a hint of Weezer, might I suggest the fantabulous "Ellegarden". They actually sing a lot of songs in English, but one of my favorite Japanese songs by them is "Jitterbug". It's ridiculously fast Japanese, but really catchy. My goal is to one day be able to do that at Karaoke... *grin* You can find a bunch of their concert footage on YouTube, if you're so inclined. For random genres all in one guy, try "Miyavi" (sometimes "MYV"). He goes from blues to angry screamy rock stuff. All over the place - and what a cutie! A couple other pop-rock/alternative/rock-ish bands that are popular with the kiddies these days are "Orange Range", "Monkey Majik" (lead singers are actually Canadians who are fluent in Japanese... makes for a nice contrast to Ellegarden), "(The) Gazette", "Porno Graffiti" (actually a really mellow band, despite their Hair Metal-esque name), as well as the always cheesy-but-well-sung "Kobukuro". You can generally find torrents for their songs on the major torrent trackers, if you want to get a taste of their music before you run out and buy all their albums. Another really great way to discover popular bands from Japan is to find torrent streams for something called "Oricon", which is like a Japan-wide hits chart. You can generally find top-100's lists for every year in the new millenium, though not all of it is quality stuff. A good way to get a feel for what is popular in Japan, though, and a decent way to find new J-pop/rock bands to sing along with. Your favourite songs - thegeezer3 - 2007-06-12 Rip Slymes songs are good. Their Rakuen Baby is all about one night stands and is pretty catchy. M-Flo have some good songs on there album as well. They have an album with collaborations with loads of famous japanese singers. Some of there tunes sound a bit cheesey but one or two pretty good. Your favourite songs - fiminor - 2007-06-13 wrightak Wrote:What was the name of the single? Do you like it?Not trying to claim it's the greatest rock music ever written, but live they were quite good! The single I bought is called "color". No idea if it was released nationally - that's the main reason I was asking if anyone else had come across them as I'm not sure whether it's just coincidence I've seen them 3 or 4 times or whether they are actually famous! Your favourite songs - dilandau23 - 2007-06-23 I came across a great song watching NHK教育 the other day that may just be the best Japanese song I have ever heard. Thanks to the obsessiveness of You Tube posters I can share it with you. おしりかじり虫 Your favourite songs - wrightak - 2007-06-24 dilandau23 Wrote:I came across a great song watching NHK教育 the other day that may just be the best Japanese song I have ever heard. I think it qualifies for both senses of the word funny as well. It's funny, but it started to get on my nerves about halfway through so I changed channel. Perhaps it's because I don't understand the Japanese that I'm missing something... Your favourite songs - synewave - 2007-06-25 Noticed the other day that oink has a J pop section. I quite like the song 「小さな恋のうた」by Mongol 800. Not a bad song itself. But mainly it reminds me of when I visited Japan during the World Cup...happy days! Your favourite songs - chamcham - 2007-06-25 many people know about JPOPSUKI tracker. But not many people know about http://www.controlle.net Controlle.net has direct download links to the latest japanese videos. They have a lot of videos that you can't find anywhere else. Your favourite songs - Istvan - 2007-07-15 I think my favourtite Japanese band is the Ulfuls. Fun, and of course you get to brush up on the Kansai-ben. Samurai Soul ええ ねん And of course the top Karaoke favourite. バンザイー Your favourite songs - sutebun - 2007-07-16 Anyone know of any good Japanese blues/classic rock (Zeppelin type stuff) bands? My girlfriend isn't exactly too knowledgeable about that genre~ I really like Dreams Come True, even though they're a bit old. The singer is one of the best singers I've ever heard. スキマスイッチ is a guy I also like. I've only heard two of his songs though... YUKI is ok for awhile, but the high pitched voice can get to me. Your favourite songs - _Qbe_ - 2007-07-16 Cool--gotta love a suggestion thread. Last year I listened to Ai Otsuka a LOT. Even my sons became fans. Currently some of my favorites are: Chemistry Judy and Mary Yui Horie (some of her older stuff, I guess) Kurumi Enomoto Asian Kung-Fu Generation Triceratops Your favourite songs - yorkii - 2007-07-17 _Qbe_ Wrote:Asian Kung-Fu GenerationI'm listening to these, too. Your favourite songs - narafan - 2007-07-17 Rip Slyme are really groovy: http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=86iUu-9qfIo Khatzumoto recommended them ![]() Awesome stuff to listen to! Your favourite songs - wrightak - 2007-08-04 I watched a beautiful anime called 秒速5センチメートル or Five Centimetres per Second (the speed at which a cherry blossom falls, I think). You can read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/By%C5%8Dsoku_5_Centimetre It's quite modern so the animation is something to behold. At the end of the film, during the closing credits, I discovered a wonderful tune. It's called One more time, One more chance by Masayoshi Yamazaki. You can check it out on youtube here: Alternatively, you can download the high quality version and watch it in all it's glory: http://www.dyn-anime.com/2007/07/dyn-anime-one-more-time-one-more-chance.html Right click and save target as with the links at the bottom. I use an open source media player to play it: VLC media player. I don't think windows media player handles it. For those of you with copyright concerns, I'm fairly sure that what I'm directing you to is just promotional. Wait until you've got a quiet moment, turn up the volume, kick back and enjoy it. At least, that's what I did. |
