Epwing2Anki doesn't perform de-inflection on the words in the word list. Make sure that the words are in dictionary form.

This might also let you create example sentences from source texts, using a process of demarcation similar to Rikaisama's.
These feature might be added someday, but probably not soon.

Awesome tool, I love it. Some suggestions:

1. An option where it chooses sentences with kanji you already know (given the user inputs a list of acceptable kanji), aside from the new word of course.

2. An option that, when your browsing through sentences to add, sorts those sentences as shortest in length first. I like simple sentences Tongue. If it did this in the automatic selection, you might get some garbage sentences.

I haven't tested out your Custom Media Player addon yet, or rather the port. I assume it's a port of Custom Media Player 2. At the moment my netbook has an epileptic seizure each time Anki plays clips.

Tried it yet? I mean aside from what was necessary to update subs2srs. If not, join us. Join the dark side. Maybe create a new version of that port of overture's sentence gloss addon that randomizes the gloss field results while you're at it. ;p

Edit: I seem to have fixed the mplayer issues, somehow resolving two other issues once I found a solution to the mplayer video/Aero conflict. Now it seems I don't have any issues w/ Anki's default audio/video playback.

First time using epwing2anki. Thanks for this!

Unfortunately, I've hit a bit of a wall. It's not able find any dictionary entries or examples in either Edict or 2 different epwing dictionaries I tried. (The epwing dictionaries work fine with EBWin.) It seems to recognizing the word list, but for each word it simply reports "unable to find entry for [word]" (or something to that effect).

Any idea what I might be doing wrong?


[*Edit: After looking at the logs cb 4960 determined the problem was that my input file had quotation marks around the text. Thanks cb!

I thought I'd mention it in case someone else encounters something similar. OpenOffice appears to save spreadsheets to text that way. Pasting it directly into a text editor avoids that problem.

Anybody have an idea of how to turn EIJIRO into an EPWING file? I actually bought a version of it a while back, and it came with a huge text file. I can search it okay in my text editor, but it would be a lot easier if I could turn it into an EPWING that would be compatible with this program, or dump it into DroidWing or EBWing.

EIJIRO can be handy, especially now that ALC seems to have a lot of its version behind a paywall. :\

Sorry for bringing up an old thread, but there's one thing I can't figure out how to do (or if it's possible or not).

Sometimes I want to create cards with one sentence or one word as the expression (front of the card), then a J-J definition as the answer/definition.

Then I always have a "hint" button where I can see the English definition or translation as well. In this hint section I'd also like to have a furigana-version of the Japanese definition, in case there are unknown words in there, or words I can't remember the pronunciation of.

Example:

FRONT
貴様らそれでも騎士か!?

BACK
騎士 -- 馬に乗っている武士

READING
貴様[きさま]らそれでも 騎士[きし]か!?

HINT
馬[うま]に 乗[の]っている 武士[ぶし] (BACK definition with furigana)
それでも still (the unknown word)

It is probably possible but your description doesn't match your example so it's hard for me to tell.

Now that I have a better understanding, I do not think Epwing2Anki is suitable for your needs as it supports neither conditional fields nor many-to-1 field mappings.

Thanks for the reply. I was just wondering if those features were available or not. The multifield thing was a minor thing really... being able to choose which fields to use furigana for would have been nice though.

Don't get me wrong though. I'll probably use this program every day for the rest of my Japanese learning career, that's how useful I think it is. It saves me a truckload of time.

It's been a while since I've used the Anki Japanese Support plugin, but I seem to recall that it allows you to generate ruby/furigana on a field-by-field basis. Maybe you can check into it if you're curious.

Is there a way to extract EVERY example sentence from 研究社新和英大辞典　and New 斉藤和英大辞典 into an excel document? Even if the japanese and english is both in one column this will be very useful.

I tried running the frequency report from the innocent novels through this asa sort of massively long term deck, and I get on out of memory error; thing is, I got rid of a lot of the data in excel, so it's <3MB, is there any way of getting the entire file done other than splitting it into chunks?
