Unihan database down for what "could be months" - gfb345 - 2010-06-03
The Unihan database at
http://www.unicode.org/charts/unihan.html
has been down "for maintenance" for several days. I learned today that it may be down for much longer: "Unihan will be down until a complete re-design is finished and implemented, which could be months." (Apparently, their server is getting hit too hard by poorly written scripts. It's the usual story: a few idiots ruin a resource for everybody else.)
This is a major bummer for me, because I relied on this tool a lot. In my experience their by-radical search was better than most.
Does anyone know of any other way to search Unihan? I'm interested in queries of the form: show me all the Unihan characters that have a particular radical.

I just noticed that too while working on the Harbaugh project. Grr.

I've noticed it's been down now for a few months, and it really was the best radical lookup around. I was using for my job, and was sad that it went down so soon after I discovered it. I've been using jisho.org as a replacement, and it's been useful. If you want the main radical only though, you need to use a different search (like by the classical number, or something like that).
Beyond that though, I emailed them on July 23, to ask what was going on (was sort of worried it wouldn't come back), and let them know how much I missed it. This was their reply:
"The Unihan database will be back by popular demand very soon. Our folks are working on posting a new version in the next week or so. No exact ETA yet though.
I will keep your email address and will inform you when it is up."
If you're attached to the site, it might be a good idea to let them know you appreciate it, and ask if you can be put on the same list for updates.
