Interesting Japanese words you come across - Jarvik7 - 2010-05-19 Many people think that the pill makes you permanently infertile or permanently decreases your fertility. IIRC Christian religious groups put a lot of negative propaganda into the country when the pill first became legal (relatively recently compared to the west) to turn people off of it. You also have to get a prescription for it and doctors are very reluctant to give it to people who aren't already married with kids (presumably to increase the low birthrate). It also seems skanky to be on the pill. Most people people don't even use condoms here, relying on the pull-out method instead, or at best the rhythm method. I know a LOT of people who have had shotgun weddings as a result. I don't think that IUDs are even an approved procedure in Japan. Abortions are slightly less taboo here than in the west, but it's still not something people do lightly. Abortions also increase the risk of miscarriage in subsequent pregnancies, and they are apparently pretty expensive (>$2000). In Canada pretty much every girl I know is on the pill/takes shots, in Japan I don't know anyone on it. yay tangent Interesting Japanese words you come across - Asriel - 2010-05-19 IceCream Wrote:and, how is the serious STD rate so low...??If nobody gets tested, then there's no numbers to go by. Interesting Japanese words you come across - Jarvik7 - 2010-05-19 Extremely low rates of hard drug use probably has something to do with it. Japanese people also have WAY less sex than the rest of the world (avg ~47 times per year vs ~115 times per year in America according to a study I read) and probably with fewer partners. I don't think it's an issue of a problem being masked by lack of testing (it is available for free here), and they would show symptoms eventually anyways. Interesting Japanese words you come across - Javizy - 2010-05-19 Seriously? You can get a free supply of pills every three months here from your GP with no hassle. You hear so many stories about splits that I never feel safe if my partner isn't taking them. In fact, I feel very little at all. From what I hear, razor sales are much lower in Japan too... Interesting Japanese words you come across - nest0r - 2010-05-19 間違いない。 Interesting Japanese words you come across - Erubey - 2010-05-19 avg ~47 times per yea =[ Interesting Japanese words you come across - gfb345 - 2010-05-21 Great thread. I can't get enough of this stuff. I wish I could contribute, but unfortunately I'm still at the 今日は level. About the only one I can think of is 侘寂, which is not so much an interesting word as an interesting aesthetic philosophy altogether. raseru Wrote:紐 - ヒモ - gigoloThese have a common thread, don't they? Regarding 女体盛り, learning that it is a ヤクザ thing makes it somehow less outlandish-sounding. (Punch it in Google Images for more "background".) It reminds me of the movie Tampopo. raseru Wrote:魑魅魍魎 - ちみもうりょう evil spirits of rivers and mountainsThat 魑魅魍魎 exists doesn't surprise me, somehow. The need to invoke such a pile-up of ghosts doesn't seem so unusual to me. Still, I'd like to know more about when such an expression would be used. (I take it to be more colloquial than one would infer from its literal translation.) FooSoft Wrote:逆ギレ: being angry at someone who would normally be angry at youThese have got to be my favorite of the lot. My Japanese friend translated the first one as "being angry when you should be sorry", and the second one as "staying in bed in a funk", not necessarily out of spite. raseru Wrote:Speaking of 逆ギレ, there's 逆ナン, which is ナンパ when girls do it.I don't quite understand why the katakana. I suppose it's a manga and/or ヤクザ thing? Interesting Japanese words you come across - ninetimes - 2010-05-21 I see those with both types of kana pretty regularly, not sure which is more frequent... online, anyway. I had no idea ナンパ even had kanji for a long time, actually. And, for the record, Google's IME drops ナンパ straight to katakana where the default MS IME dropped straight to 軟派. Well. Technically it went to the homonym for shipwreck and then that, but the kana versions were a ways down... Interesting Japanese words you come across - Eikyu - 2010-05-21 Amazing word: 雨男 man whose presence seems to cause rain Bet those guys would be popular in a desert environment. 雨女 is also good. Interesting Japanese words you come across - Javizy - 2010-05-21 ninetimes Wrote:I see those with both types of kana pretty regularly, not sure which is more frequent... online, anyway.ナンパ has an extra 8 million Google results over 軟派 too. I've never seen it written in kanji myself. I like the word 出っ尻(でっちり) - a butt that sticks out. That doesn't really interest me though. I have a feeling many RTK members do find it interesting. Please check the shakuhachi stories if you don't believe me. Interesting Japanese words you come across - ta12121 - 2010-06-02 for 魑魅魍魎 I think recognizing it/knowing how to read it is fine. Writing it, I hope I never need to do so lol. Interesting Japanese words you come across - Asriel - 2010-06-02 水も滴る This came up in 素直になれなくて a few weeks ago. Guy got splashed with a drink, and he said this. At first I was like "Yes, he is dripping wet....wtf?" Then I found out he was saying "damn I'm good looking" Would that be considered a pun? Regardless, I thought it was funny. Interesting Japanese words you come across - Asriel - 2010-06-02 Not a phrase, but a poem by some dude named 明恵上人, also known as 月の歌人: あかあかや あかあかあかや あかあかや あかやあかあか あかあかや月 Search あかあか on google, and this is the first thing that will pop up in it's suggestion box, for things you want to type Interesting Japanese words you come across - chamcham - 2010-06-20 OK. Writing it, I hope I never need to do so lol. It's actually not that bad because the phonetic components are all clear except for the first kanji -- if you know 未, 網, and 両 (old form). Unfortunately 禽 is きん, so it's not perfect. (For the usage, which someone asked about, it's just used if you're saying "that place is infested with ghosts" or something like that...I've only seen it in video games and manga, though.) Interesting Japanese words you come across - liosama - 2010-06-21 朝立ち lol What is this rhythm method you speak of? edit nvm i thought you were talking about a rhythm in which the male penetrates the female, like at a certain varying frequency continually checking up on how close he is to climaxing, anyway nvm Interesting Japanese words you come across - Katsuo - 2010-06-21 ta12121 Wrote:for 魑魅魍魎 I think recognizing it/knowing how to read it is fine.Agreed, but I couldn't resist... I sometimes learn words that use combinations of rare kanji by combining parts into one mega-story. E.g. for "supernatural creatures" 魑魅魍魎: A sheik (禽) I know has been having problems with supernatural creatures, i.e. a couple of onis (鬼) that keep raiding his tent. When I ask "Have you caught those onis?", he replies with a confident, "Not yet!" (未). "But we've prepared a net (罔), so maybe we'll get one tonight". Just then the sheik's aide rushes in shouting they've caught something. Checking the net we see they got not one, but both the onis. Cripes, they're both a lot older-looking (兩) than I expected. Interesting Japanese words you come across - thecite - 2010-06-21 Anyone who's watched Trick would know this word pretty well: 貧乳 See if you can guess this one: 巨根 出来ちゃった婚 ー Getting married due to pregnancy 干物女 - A lazy, messy girl with no interest in romance ウテウテ - A guy who likes to pick up women 縁遠い - Finding it hard to get married ちょちょいのちょい - Casual 話しを盛る/盛る - Building suspense over a boring story 死の水を取る - Attending to someone on their death bed 八紘一宇 - A united world 刎ねる - To decapitate カチンコチン - An uptight person かちんこ - Those clappers they use in movies 千載一遇 - A once in a lifetime opportunity (Literally, once in a thousand years) W杯 - World cup! 揉み逃げ - Groping a woman's chest and fleeing 親父狩り - A group of punks robbing a salaryman ロリコン - Lolita complex, i.e. Adults being sexually attracted to children デカ ー Slang for 刑事 (Detective) ガサ入れ - House raid (by the police) 何処迄でも良い、精一杯でいいから、 走れ! I'll leave it there. Interesting Japanese words you come across - chamcham - 2010-08-18 Here's my new favorite word: 碇草 (いかりそう) It means "horny goat weed". Maybe everyone should try smoking the same weed that horny goats like.....lol.... |
