Taiko Lessons and Japanese Instruments - chamcham - 2010-05-11

I've been taking taiko lessons for some time now.

Yesterday, I happened to stumble upon a personal blog of
an American who was part of a Seattle taiko group. She
moved to japan and now practices with a Japanese taiko group.

Very interesting blog.

She even has videos on youtube under the name "allthingstaiko".

But the best part is that she has these semi-weekly taiko
drill videos. Really awesome for people learning taiko. I
think she has 43 taiko drills so far.

In addition, for anyone playing shime-daiko (the small high-pitched
drum that taiko groups use), there's a FREE 30-day course.

PDF:

In the PDF, there's a link to mp3 audio samples of all practice drills.
Each lesson is supposed to take roughly 20 minutes.

If anyone has any links to FREE resources with drills for taiko
or any japanese instruments (和楽器), please post them here.

Also, shime-daiko are expensive ($600 to $1500).
But you can probably get away with using a conga head($30-$50) and snare drum stand($40-$100).

For taiko practice, many groups use spare tires to practice on. When I'm at home,
I use an exercise ball as a drum.

Thanks.

Very cool. When I was in music school I did a research project on Japanese traditional music and incorporating it into modern Western orchestral writing. Part of the project was to write a 3-minute composition for orchestra including instruments from the country of choice. I used a bunch of taiko drums, shakuhachi, and shamisen. Fun project!
