Forgetting the previously learned kanji :(. - Koin1 - 2010-05-04 First I'd like to confess that my memory isn't working 100% correctly (that has resulted in my grades dropping). So I'd like to ask whether it's normal to forget the previously learned kanji. I'm using Anki and have studied a bit over 400 kanji now and I don't have any mature cards yet. If I don't review a kanji in like 6 days, I forget it. Does anyone else have similar experiences? Do you forget kanji that you haven't seen in a while? Forgetting the previously learned kanji :(. - Groot - 2010-05-04 Hmm, I use the review system here at "Reviewing the Kanji", and I'm constantly forgetting and re-studying kanji. For new ones, I need to study every day, not every sixth day. For older ones, they stick with me longer, so I take advantage of the site's spaced-repetition system and review them less often, but I still forget some of them too. My recall rate averages around 80%. So I think your experience sounds normal enough. Can you set up Anki to make you review new stuff every day? Forgetting the previously learned kanji :(. - Koin1 - 2010-05-04 Regarding the question about reviewing every day, there is a "review early" option. I might use that whenever I have time. Forgetting the previously learned kanji :(. - Codexus - 2010-05-04 Don't review early, it's only going to make things worse. Forgetting is normal and nothing to be afraid of. You will remember those kanji eventually you just have to keep going at a steady pace without worrying about how many you remember and how many you forget. Of course, you can still work on improving your memorization technique, find out which stories work for you and which ones don't. But focus on the process not on immediate results. Forgetting the previously learned kanji :(. - Koin1 - 2010-05-04 Alright, that's nice to hear. Thanks! I won't review early. Have you gone to the doctor or something? I my opinion memory failure must be taken seriously, regardless of age, gender, ect. Of course if you are just exhasuted from learning / studying that's another case
Forgetting the previously learned kanji :(. - Groot - 2010-05-04 You're right, Raschaverak, I should have asked about that too. Are you OK physically, Koin1? Can you set up Anki to make you review new stuff every day? There is a setting in Anki called new cards per day. Open a deck and you will see three numbers before you do the first rep. The first one is "New cards per day." You can enter all the new facts you want, but Anki will limit new cards shown to the number you choose (20 by default). The next one is "Minutes per session" (10 by default). This is a timeboxing feature. Timeboxing is the idea that productivity occurs in short burts and your study schedule should match this. The last one is "Cards per session (0, or disabled, by default)." This is another timeboxing setting. There's one more feature called "cram" you should learn about. It's useful for intensely studying subsets of items. http://ichi2.net/anki/wiki/CramMode Forgetting the previously learned kanji :(. - hereticalrants - 2010-05-04 Just think how awful life would be if we didn´t forget stuff... Forgetting the previously learned kanji :(. - ta12121 - 2010-05-05 you'll forget but you will definitely learn. Also you will fail a lot of times but you will keeping improving and getting better. Forgetting the previously learned kanji :(. - guppy - 2010-05-05 ta12121 x2 I only recently realized that it's ok to forget some of the previously "learned" kanji. I used to get really upset and beat myself up if I didn't get 100% on previously learned Kanji. I've become very comfortable with the fact that through constant exposure and persistance, it will eventually pay off. Just keep at it
Forgetting the previously learned kanji :(. - Koos83 - 2010-05-05 Pff I have kanji that I've failed 6 times or so. I've passed them like, 14 times before, and then one day I still fail them. It's frustrating for a moment, but then I just move on and make sure I don't forget it again. Forgetting the previously learned kanji :(. - Koin1 - 2010-05-05 Thanks for the replies, everyone! Raschaverak: I have talked to a doctor about my memory problems, but they all just say that it's temporary and that it will go away which I don't really believe. And yes, Groot, I'm physically ok, thanks for asking .

I personally don't trust doctors at all... no matter in which country I am, or where I'm from. I try not to rely on doctors (or in other words: help from outside) ALONE. Always use your intuition, that is one of the best ways to determine whether you are sick or not, beleive me. Try to get as much information as you can about your problems, then evaluate, then ask a doctor. Compare and analyse. Doctors are always in the danger of generalizing. They see a few symptomps, then they give a diagnosis, perhaps a perscription for some medicine, and that's it, next please! (Unless you're state is indeed very serious, and they have to run a full-scale test.). Anyways, did the doctors give a good reasoning why your problem with your memory will go away / is only temporary? Besides why do you think that this problem is not temporary? I'm curious because I've just been to a doctor with similar problems, but as it turned out it was a false alarm....but I don't trust them much, so I keep testing myslef....seems that my memory is fine for now

But the thing is, for me nowadays it's more of sometimes confusing when to use the right kanji readings in context. I swear one kanji has 5+ readings and I still get them confused from time to time. The srs will fix it over time just give it time. The system is simple but it's awesome how effective it is. Especially kana to kanji(production). You can easily remember the kanji from memory after a while of doing this. I personally don't trust doctors at all... There was this one event in my life, that I'd rather not reveal, that made me think was the cause for my memory problems. Later I was convinced that that really is the cause for my problems since I have read about other people's similar experiences. I still think like that even though science says that kind of event won't affect memory. |
