Hello there.

I have created a page where you can create practice and test pages for yourself.
Just jump to:
http://rtk.semuel.co.il/
And go to the auto-generator.

You can:
- create pages for any range of charecters,
- mix them all together, mix every page or not without any mix.

well, have fun.
Shmuel.

Had a quick look at your page. Created a test, Adobe fired up, hit back on my browser and IE died.

Just tried again, did the same thing but no crash.

It looks pretty good. I would probably have used this on my way through RTK1. And will if it can generate quizzes for RTK3. Doesn't seem to like it when I try to create quizzes for above 2042.

One suggestion would be to get rid of the frame numbers. Personally I think it gives too much of a hint as to what primatives the character may (or may not) contain.

Practice/Test Pages - semuel - 2007-05-28

I'm sorry, but I don't have the kanji above 2024.
(and even that list I got from the owner of this site)
If you have such a list, I can easily add it to the current list.
(text, excel or any other readable format)

About removing the page number, it's a great idea. will do it. will post in this thread when it's done.

Shmuel.

Practice/Test Pages - ファブリス - 2007-05-28

semuel, I'm emailing you a file in UTF8 format with all the RTK kanji and their keywords.

Practice/Test Pages - chamcham - 2007-05-28

i think you mean 2042 kanji instead of 2024

Practice/Test Pages - semuel - 2007-05-28

Now the frame numbers in the test pages are optional.

Now you can feed it up to 3007 - thanks to Fabrice.
I will have to add an explaination in the html page - tommorow. I'm SO tired.
And the new file contain readings. is there anything usefull to do with that?

Oh, and for synewave: just reinstall windows. and IE. and Acrobat Reader. then it *might* work. or not.

Shmuel.

Damn, that was fast ^_^

semuel Wrote:And the new file contain readings. is there anything usefull to do with that?
No suggestions meant on my part, it was just a data file I had readily available.

Practice/Test Pages - synewave - 2007-05-28

Great to see you've got the RTK3 keywords up there.

Practice/Test Pages - suffah - 2007-05-30

Semuel, thanks for this tool, I'm going to use it a lot.

Is it possible to add a feature to only generate the keywords and not the solutions? Thank you!

Just found a link in Leitner's webpage to yours. It looks great! I'm sure I'll make good use of it. Haven't really had a chance yet but will be pleased to update you when I have a few weeks experience.
One thing I miss on Leitner's webpage and apparently yours is any method for testing knowledge of the primitives. I believe it would be helpful if I could practice on a separate page of primitives. For example, if a primitive is used for the first time in frame #48, then it might be referred to as #47a. There might be a #47b too. I need to think about this some more. One complexity might be that some primitives have more than one meaning.
Anyway, I greatly appreciate your work and your decision to make it available to all.
As a matter of reference, I'm up to frame 554, 77 years old and keeping my brain stimulated by learning Japanese instead of working crossword puzzles. And I don't yet have Heisner's Kanji I because it's out of print and I don't want to pay $200 for in on ebay. Maybe that's why I'm having primitive problems. Kanji I is on the way, though, from back order. Maybe I'll get it next week.
Best to you
Richard Cooper

Hi Richcoop, and welcome.

Which "Leitner's" webpage is that?

Yes, definitely get the RtK book when you can. Get the primitives solidly down, as they are the foundation of the method, and you will benefit from Heisig's insights, as well as all his notes/stories for the first 512 kanji.

If you mean Heisig's Remembering the Kanji I, it is not out of print. Amazon.com is selling it for about $20 - http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/0824831659/

Hi All! It's nice to see that people are actually using that page.

suffah Wrote:Is it possible to add a feature to only generate the keywords and not the solutions? Thank you!
I don't think it's a good idea - another option will only serve to confuse the users. please generate whatever you need, and just don't print the pages with the kanjis.

richcoop Wrote:One thing I miss on Leitner's webpage and apparently yours is any method for testing knowledge of the primitives.
Hmm.. no. it make no sense to test this. by practicing the kanji you practice everything that included in them, including the primitives.
plus, it's damn hard to implement. (instead of adding charecters, I will have to paint them, one by one. brrr...)

Actually, I would appreciate testing primitives on this site as well: often when testing a recent lesson, I find that I can remember the primitives in the stories but fail to recall how to write the actual primitive.

If my brief glimpse at RtK Vol. 3 is any indicator, a good amount of the primitives already exist as standalone characters, thus making it easier to test them: just change the keyword and somehow add it to the index. The others, however, would probably require an actual picture and thus be somewhat problematic to add.

Practice/Test Pages - Tweenk - 2007-08-06

The decomposition of a kanji into primitives and the meanings of primitives aren't fixed, since many people adjust them to suit their imaginations. I think this makes primitive testing prohibitively hard to implement sensibly.

Practice/Test Pages - Megaqwerty - 2007-08-06

The keywords aren't fixed either: there are quite few people that use alternate keywords, yet everyone gets along just fine.

The most important thing is that that page (with the radicals) simply exists, because then you could change the keyword to whatever you saw fit with Greasemonkey.

Hi Richcoop, and congratulations, I hope you will keep on your studies for a long time.

I'm afraid that you are a bit confused, Sebastian Leitner was a German who created the spaced repetition system, which Fabrice gently used to create this site for learning Kanji. So, Fabrice (ファブリス) is the creator of this site -correct me if I'm wrong- and Sebastian Leitner has nothing to do with it.

By the way, this forum is part of the site you refer to -pay attention to it and compare it to the address shown right now on your internet browser, which is something like http://forum.koohii.com/post.php?tid=554&qid=blablabla

Practice/Test Pages - bendyarm - 2007-08-10

Thanks for the tool, Semuel!

I have two simple suggestions for new features.

1) allow the set of kanji to be specified in more
detail than a single range. E.g.: "44,51-53,60-80"

2) add a flag that will reverse (right-to-left)
the locations of the kanji from the locations of
the keywords. Then, if you print out double-sided
on thick paper, the page can be cut up and used
as flashcards.

Cheers,
bendyarm

Practice/Test Pages - jbudding - 2007-08-14

I got a free set of flash cards from http://www.polarcloud.com/ with the RTK1 and RTK 3 in 2 PDF's ready for printing. I still make my own though on the handy pre-cut blank cards from Sparknotes which I pick up at the barnes & noble bookseller in their study guide section. They're not as pretty as the polar cloud ones but it helps that their in my own handwriting.

Practice/Test Pages - skylarth - 2007-08-14

hey semuel! the tool looks great. i have been swamped latley, and havent have time to use it yet, but i plan to start soon. i do have one request. my principal reason for wanting to use your pages is to improve my handwriting. (its great to be able to write 2000 kanji, but if your handwriting sucks, japanese people will just laugh at you; also its really rewarding when you write something that looks kind of right) Smile so, with that in mind, do you think you could add a feature to but in a box for each kanji to write them in? i dont think it would be that hard.. like ideally it would be like a box, with dotted vertical and horizontal lines.

anyways, even if you dont add this i plan on using your pages! thanks a bunch for the hard work... Smile

Practice/Test Pages - Yatsuzaki - 2007-08-15

semuel, the tool is great. I used it before, but now I can't access the page. Is it down permanently?

Practice/Test Pages - semuel - 2007-11-18

Hi all - I'm back.

Yatsuzaki - no, it's up. I use it (almost) dayly. It may be down from time to time (the server is not very rialible) but generally it is up.

skylarth - Great idea, those kanji boxs. I implemented them. hope they work for you

bendyarm - hmmm.. nice, but I don't think that I will implement it on the web. maybe I'll create a standalone version that give the user ability to manage his own list and produce his own test pages. maybe not.

Shmuel.

Practice/Test Pages - indigo - 2008-01-09

Hi Semuel,

I think your practice page is a great help.
Maybe Fabrice could put a link to it in the links page so more people will be aware of it?
