proofreading with textaloud - nest0r - 2010-04-18

I love it when stuff comes together further towards the big picture, so here we go...

Per what I've written elsewhere about using complementary senses whenever possible, or using TTS/audio even when the goal isn't listening or speaking practice, repeatedly recommending that shared TTS plugin for Anki and its unfortunately tinny playback issue, Kage Shibari (balloonguy's standalone, online and offline tool for interactive audio which everyone needs to get to work creating stuff for! I'm working on something good to share) and having highlights during audio playback of text, syntactic satiation (or that common set of errors where fill in missing words, or filter out multiple articles in a a row), or the mention of text-to-speech in multimedia comprehensible output to change perspective via another modality and check errors...

Did you know you can use TextAloud to Proofread? You set up a hotkey for it in TextAloud, and when you're in any program, select a block of text and hit the hotkey, and a special TextAloud window will popup and as it reads the selected text, it even highlights it... then if you click the window again, it switches back to the original place, otherwise it closes automatically unless you tell it not to.

But even better, you don't even need the aforementioned TTS plugin for Anki with its tinny playback, you can get the clear high quality playback from TextAloud by setting up a Speak Text hotkey, and it doesn't even switch windows, it just plays the selected text from the background! And this has been around a while and I simply never noticed these two options. Bah.

Anyway, hope you find this useful, I know I can think of a dozen uses...
