Summertime! Full-time studying! Yay! - Megaqwerty - 2007-05-25 Over the past three weeks I haven't been studying as much as I would have liked due to impending finals, but with that now cleared, I feel that I can devote myself to Remembering the Kanji. The pertinent quote: Dr. Hellsing Wrote:I was convinced that proficiency in writing the kanji could be attained in four to six weeks if one were to make a full-time job of it....Still, my own experience with studying the kanji and the relatively small number of individuals I have directed in the methods of this book, bears that estimate out, and I do not hesitate to repeat it here. While I would to like consume at least 60 kanji daily (thus allowing me to complete both RtK vol. I and vol. III in little over a month from now), I'm interested in the actual practicality of this, as inserting that many flashcards into the system would probably cause a massive build-up of reviews (since I began the book 50 days ago, I have only averaged 19 kanji a day and reviews have still been quite numerous), but I do know that at least one person here had completed the whole of RtK vol. I within four to six weeks. So, if you have any comments, please do tell. Summertime! Full-time studying! Yay! - suffah - 2007-05-25 I'm actually in a similar boat to yours. I've been doing 25 per day pretty steadily, I think I'm going to kick it up to 50 per day for the next couple of weeks to finish the book. The thing that is killing me time-wise is that I'm using leosmith's excellent technique for getting the kanji stuck in my head, namely reviewing each kanji each morning and night for 3 days before throwing it into Leitner. I wish I did this the first time around, I would have finished by now! Summertime! Full-time studying! Yay! - ziggr - 2007-05-25 Congratulations on surviving finals. I love that RTK fans see summer break as "oh goody, I can hammer through kanji faster now that I'm on vacation!" ^_^ 60 a day is quite reasonable. Hammering through all of RTK in one month means you'll be done before the 30-day clock starts expiring cards from your last box, which will be quite a time saver. Remember that after 3 days, you'll have 60 cards to review in addition to your 60 new cards. After 3+7=10 days, you'll have 60x2=120 cards for daily review, after 3+7+14=24 days you'll have 3x60=180 cards, and after 3+7+14+30=54 days, you'll have 4x60=240 cards expiring daily. If you do indeed go after RTK full time during summer, let us all know how it goes. Summertime! Full-time studying! Yay! - Ramchip - 2007-05-26 I'm also trying to complete RTK1 as fast as possible this summer. Although I do have a full-time job, it leaves me plenty of free time to do Heisig, unlike college classes. Good luck to all of us! Summertime! Full-time studying! Yay! - chamcham - 2007-05-26 It's good to have a set plan and goal. But don't sacrifice quality for quantity. If you're tired after 25 kanji, don't half-ass the next 35 just so that you can reach that magic number 60(or whatever number it is). Even on days where it's obvious that you'll never reach 60, just do what you can and live with it. It's really more about persistence than speed. Do the best you can the first time through and you won't have to re-learn things a second time. Anyway, good luck. Summertime! Full-time studying! Yay! - distefam - 2007-05-31 I too am in the same boat. This is my last summer before college, where I plan to major in Japanese (along with computer science). I want to have completed RTK1 and be well into reviewing using the method outlined at All Japanese All the Time by the time classes start. Summertime! Full-time studying! Yay! - Serge - 2007-06-01 My goal is 6,000 characters by year end. I give myself another 1.5 months to familiarise myself with them and then a few more months should suffice for learning them properly... Luckily, the more you know, the easier it gets! Summertime! Full-time studying! Yay! - Megaqwerty - 2007-06-05 Ugh...I vastly underestimated the time requirements of Boys State. So far I've been keeping up on my reviews, albeit at the essentially complete sacrifice of my sixty-a-day goal: at worse, I'll miss my one month target window by a week, so I guess it's not that bad. I'll imply that it would be better to review what I know versus attempting to add to what I know while not reviewing, as much as I would hate to deviate from my target, so I'll stick with this for now. |
