Been playing with it, so far it's quite cool: http://www.hongfire.com/forum/showthread.php?t=94395 - Especially once I got JParser working (Stuck edict.gz in the dictionaries folder.)

This tool freaking rocks. It would be great if I could append to the Original Text window instead of replacing when it's monitoring my clipboard.

Edit: Okay wait, I can't copy/paste stuff from JParser, and configuration options don't work? Between that and no Mecab, I guess I can't use it for what I wanted. Although JParser works pretty well on its own.

Edit 2: I'm over at Hongfire now, the programmer seems amiable and open to suggestions.

Edit 3: Nevermind, looks I'm stuck looking for an offline parser. One day, someone will make this miracle tool that does what we already have a million tools do to some extent or another, except offline.

A web-based tool should do what you need, right? Write out some more detailed specs, perhaps with some images to lay things out the way you want, and I'll consider writing it.

I didn't download his tool, and don't intend to since it's an executable, so don't assume I know anything about what he's already done. Smile

I just meant this or something like it, but offline:

http://forum.koohii.com/showthread.php?tid=5423 - Not to presume on what ThomasB intends, perhaps it's something they're thinking about, but, basically there appears to be multiple web services that do something similar: http://www.kynd.info/dev/2009/01/javascript-japanese-analizer-powered-by-mecapi.html ; http://www.jdictionary.com/parser/ - but even though the former you can save as a local file (or rather as a complete page), as opposed to the others, it still refers to the web thingy Mecapi: http://mimitako.net/api/mecapi.cgi - My worry is relying on a single site for such a tool. There's even a post about Kynd.info where they're notifying people that their own parser is no longer broken because Mecapi's back up, so it's happened before: http://www.kynd.info/dev/2009/07/web-service-mecapi-is-back.html

I did find a 'mirror' of Mecapi: http://www.tahoo.org/~taku/software/mecapi/mecapi.cgi

Yahoo has a parser as well, though no idea how it works: http://developer.yahoo.co.jp/webapi/jlp/ma/v1/parse.html

Just wanted to bump this because in retrospect despite my failure to convince the programmer to allow copy/pasting it's still an awesome tool; I honestly don't think being able to copy/paste the JParser or Mecab windows is necessary or even makes sense come to think of it, given the style of its presentation... the WWWJDIC window which breaks down text + definitions can be copy/pasted + you can use multiple online dictionaries including ATLAS as offline (I don't have that installed so no idea if it breaks down text or does regular translation, and not to mention both JParser/Mecab have the pop-up style definitions built-in (via offline edict dictionary), deconjugates, etc., so.

Yes, it's a fantastic tool that pretty much does everything.

Example:

I copy this text: "小学生のとき、 近所にこぢんまりとした公園があった。" and TA automatically recognizes and processes it to different windows, so you then have the WWWJDIC window which shows (with highlighting):

小学生のとき、近所にこぢんまりとした公園があった。

小学生 【しょうがくせい】 (n) elementary school student; primary school student; grade school student; (P); ED
近所 【きんじょ】 (n,adj-no) neighbourhood; neighborhood; (P); ED
こぢんまり (adv,n) compact; KD
公園 【こうえん】 (n) (public) park; (P); ED

JParser has the "小学生のとき、 近所にこぢんまりとした公園があった。" highlighted (particles/terms in diff colours) with furigana, and mouseover shows Stardict/Rikaichan-style deconjugated definitions.

The machine translations come up with varying quality.

I'm just curious as to why you were browsing the hentai game section of hongfire in the first place...

Translation Aggregator - fakewookie - 2011-01-18

Now I have to delete that from my browsing history...

I wasn't. What does Translation Aggregator have to do with the hentai game section of Hongfire? And what is this hentai game of which you speak?

"Hentai Game Discussion" is the subforum in which the linked thread is located.
This fact suggests you tend to hang out at the wrong websites.

I don't think it does suggest that. Are you not able to visit the page without going through the subforum? You should have just clicked the link, it would have taken you there directly.

I never noticed that subforum before. I found Translation Aggregator through Google. Why is it 'wrong', though? Is this 'hentai game' something bad? I've never heard of it before. At any rate, please don't let the location of the TA thread dissuade you from using the tool.

The tool was obviously made with visual novels in mind, and most visual novels contain adult content; that's why it was posted there. But the tool itself is work-safe.

A visual novel is one of those interactive novels? I didn't realize it was predominantly "hentai game". I thought there was a wide variety. As an asexual abstract internet entity I'll be sure to avoid them in the future (never read one but I'd intended to because it seemed like a useful style).

I'm glad you say the tool is work-safe. I was worried that I'd been infected somehow, despite using the tool for purely its fantastic translation functions.

There are many visual novels with no sexual content, and many famous 18+ visual novels have a console version with the adult content removed, so there's no need to avoid them completely.
