can you get hold of scripts for japanese films in japanese? - thegeezer3 - 2007-05-24

I know a ton of sites that have western film scripts in english but can you get hold of japanese movie scripts written in japanese??? This would help out when watching films/dramas and trying to find out what they said for studying later on. I know their are subs on some japanese films but that requires pausing and copying the kanji down as it is on screen etc... a script would be a lot faster to work with plus it would make good reading practice.

Are there any workarounds? Can you get hold of dvd japanese subtitles and just copy them into word.

DUDE, that would be sweet. What about video games, though? Would that be okay, too?

I know there are Japanese scripts for a couple of the Final Fantasy games online, FF7 at least (of course, I can't find them right now... but they're out there). Plus, if you don't mind playing old games, I know you can find ROMs for old Japanese SNES games to play on a SNES emulator. Things like Chrono Trigger and old FF titles and whatnot. Games will most likely have a bunch of special words that don't come up very often in regular life, but you can usually take your time reading the character dialogues in most ancient-a$$ games, so presumably you could figure out what was going on easily enough. *shrug*

Not sure if you're into video games or what, but playing emulated games from the 80's in Japanese sounds like a sweet way to practice to me. *grin*

If people know of any places to find Japanese scripts for video games or whatever, please post them.

There is a site for scripts to Japanese drama. But it's in Japanese and I can't remember what the site is. I think it was listed somewhere in the d-addicts forums, but I'm not too sure.

Ah, here it is:

http://dramanote.seesaa.net/

You have to click on the "Category" links on the sidebar.
It has scripts, but no timings. And they even have current dramas.... :-)

There are plenty of text dumps for English games so I'm sure that there are text dumps for Japanese games. But even if they don't have them (especially for whatever game you were thinking of), you could always make them yourself as there are tools for dumping pure text. As you mentioned emulation, you obviously have no problems acquiring the roms that would be necessary to actually extract anything, so just look for a utility that can extract text. Although in writing this, I just realized that any utilities you might find bear a distinct probability of not having Japanese support.

The only issue I see with this is that video games really don't require a script: you have all the time you want to figure out what's being said (with the exception of when voice acting is involved) and if you really have some major problems, you could just record a save state and come back to that exact moment later on.

There are plenty of programs out there that allow you to rip the various files (including the subtitile files) out of a dvd. I've never done it but I don't see why you couldn't, say, rip out a subtitle file and export it to a text file, somehow.

I am doing this right now for the Japanese version of The Empire Strikes back and it is a real pain. The subtitles are stored on the DVD as images and therefore have to be recognized using some form of OCR. I found SubRip to do this but it seems that you have to build an OCR matrix from scratch (that means you have to type in the character the first time its shape is encountered) since it doesn't recognize Japanese characters out of the box. And if the font changes it seems you have to build a new matrix. It took me about 4 hours to get through 20 minutes of text, but it can me done. If anyone knows of an easier way I would be happy to hear it.

On a side note the Japanese subtitles and the Japanese dubbed text are quite a bit different. In a way this adds an extra learning element, but it can also be a bit frustrating.

Resurrecting the thread.
are dramanote.seesaa.net and dramanote.com the only sites with the jdrama scripts?
They are a little hard to navigate, and I can't find the drama I'm looking for ("Stand Up!!"). Does anybody know of better sites for this purpose?

I've had luck finding scripts for a decent number of Ghibli movies. Try searching for the movie title (in Japanese) along with 全セリフ or 全セリフ集 on Google. (Google seems to be good at searching for セリフ, せりふ and 台詞 at the same time, so it doesn't matter which one you put in your query.)

So, I found a page that actually is all about providing Japanese movie scripts. The thing is, you've to request for a script and they make it for you. Written in both Japanese and English with language explanations on every page and the whole films vocab, it's damn handy!! The site is new I guess since this is the first time I've come across it. Here's the link:

If you are doing the P2P thing, try searching the name of the movie file (without extension) appended with ".jp" or "_jp" to find subs timed to the exact movie you are watching.
