How true are these stuff?

Croatian Girl Goes into Coma, Wakes Up Fluent in German - chamcham - 2010-04-13

My girlfriend went into a coma and woke up with big boobs.... :-)

Haha, but seriously, I wouldn't doubt that this is possible.
Maybe he somehow awaked the English in his subconscious.

Hmm...maybe us RevTKers should try wacking each other in the
head and maybe we'll wake up fluent in Japanese.

Anybody want to have a "crack" at it?..... :-p

I volunteer. Hit hard! I don't want to wake up too soon.

This stuff really intrigues me. It's just so fascinating how little we really know about the true nature of the brain. Unbelievable...

Croatian Girl Goes into Coma, Wakes Up Fluent in German - bodhisamaya - 2010-04-13

Makes me wonder where the mind was and what it was during while in the coma. My 1st wife could leave her body in periods of deep meditation.

Croatian Girl Goes into Coma, Wakes Up Fluent in German - Womacks23 - 2010-04-13

I have questions about the article.

How can someone wake up from a coma speaking "biblical" languages. These languages have been dead for 3000 years so how can someone possibly wake up from a coma speaking it without some kind of prior exposure to it?

It sounds to me like that doctor was just talking about more or less urban legends, he said "references to cases" but that could be anything.

Croatian Girl Goes into Coma, Wakes Up Fluent in German - nest0r - 2010-04-13

You'd do better to read up on how multiple languages are processed in the brain than paying attention to vague/anecdotal reporting about miraculous fluency after brain trauma. ;p

Apparently in bilinguals, really interesting cases of aphasia have been found, such as being unable to speak the L1 one day while retaining fluency in L2, but then switching back the next day...

They don't. Never mind that the only references to such a thing happening that turn up in Google point back to this article, even if it's true he never says those people never had prior exposure. Obviously those languages exist in some form today, or they wouldn't have been able to identify what they were speaking. It's likely that, like in every other reported case of this sort of thing happening, they were already quite familiar with the language they ended up speaking, but weren't very good at speaking it before the coma.

Also, I find it strange that we can have pages upon pages of long-winded debate about what it means to be "fluent", but nobody questions what this half-page article means by the girl being able to "perfectly communicate" in German. Tongue

This is particularly hilarious:

I straight up don't believe it. Like Nestor said - it is totally anecdotal. Cases like this are usually debunked when put under the microscope.

"The press reports of his fluency in English are based entirely on the reports of his Czech team-mates. There is no record of his allegedly fluent speech or report by a native English speaker" <- From wiki...

I used to go to an Assembly of God church with my friend in high school occasionally. Those people would get all worked up and put themselves in sort of a trance where they would "speak in tongues", as it was explained to me after my first shocking experience there. I never really understood the religious purpose of this practice, but was told by the seemingly hypnotized followers they had no control over what was coming out of their mouths during services.

Plenty of studies on that as well. ^_^

Maybe I'm reading too far into your second comment, but it seems like you're skeptical about speaking in tongues but then turn around and talk about someone leaving their body through meditation.

Isn't the latter a bit more worthy of skepticism?

Oh yeah I speak fluent glossolalia. You can too in about 18 months! AGATT -> All glossolalia all the time! Total immersion, pentecostal media environment, and of course, the sentence method in an SRS!

And that there proves it!

Anyone seen "Jesus Camp"?

I think I heard of a case where a Norwegian woman received a head injury. When she came to, she had a German accent, which didn't help her any, as it was in the middle of WWII. It's referenced on Wikipedia, actually, but there's no way to look at the original source...

"glossolalia can be acquired with relative ease by
almost anyone with the requisite motivations"

My AGATT method is really all about motivation too!

Uhhhhhhh..... yeah, did I say months? I meant 18 seconds dude.

But seriously -> the whole thing is pretty interesting. I am not a learned scientist, but I vaguely remember learning about hypnosis in psychology class, and how it is related to social expectations. Bohdisamya's comment made me think of this (as well as zer0range ->read on). And while my personal idea's (all open to revision - I am a bit of a scientist after all) about out of body travel could be called biased (I'm no skeptic), I can't help but wonder about peoples beliefs and expectations, and how this plays out into experienced realities. Pentecostals may indeed experience the lords possession - sure they learned it and felt pressure/social expectations to make this happen (again my admittedly biased interpretation - but the science holds up here me thinks), but perhaps for them it is a total reality, just as a meditator/buddhist experiences the bardo. I'm not trying to say what's "real" or not, merely pointing out that the buddhists are trained for it and perhaps expect to experience it, and so in turn DO.

Like how people report out of body experiences -> they may experience visions specifically relating to their religious beliefs and expectations.

If I went into a coma, I would probably wake up fluent in English.
