So what's the deal with this translation thing? http://www.fujitsu.com/global/services/software/translation/atlas/

Anyone used it? Any good? I see it referenced a lot at light novel/manga sites such as Hongfire (was just reading its interactions with AGTH as posted by Sebastian recently).

Apparently it's good for getting a sense of what the actual translation is.

If you look at what Atlas outputs in the small box, it doesn't quite make sense.

Eh, as far as machine translation goes it's a step above Google Translate. You can switch it so that it basically functions as a local version of WWWJDIC's Translate Words feature. That's mildly useful, I suppose, but I prefer just looking things up manually in my dictionaries. Mostly because I'm of the opinion that if I need a definition for every word in a block of text, I probably have no business trying to read it.

Hmmm I see. I agree (@Mcjon), I usually just use piecemeal translations (via StarDict) and work out the sentence myself.

Might be useful to use Atlas to bulk translate for when you want to quickly search through texts based on content and then refer back to the original for actual study/analysis... I've been happy with Google for that, re: sites, but I've been meaning to build a large nonfiction .txt/etc. library, so I might use Atlas for such a thing...

Yes, OH So incredibly accurate and useful:

Spoiler:
Turns out the movie "Electric Horseman" was titled "出逢い", so it actually is a "faithful" translation

lol. I'll need to see more examples/try it out myself before I decide. I've gotten worse translations than that from Google. Though usually that's when names are involved.

I would suggest taking a closer look at my previous post to realize "what went wrong"

Oh, haha.

Yeah, it has a pretty awful name dictionary. You pretty much have to enter those in ahead of time for whatever you're trying to have it translate. There's also a mod on Hongfire somewhere that forces it to parse sentences at commas, which may or may not improve translations overall.

The translation memory feature is nice, though, I'll give it that. Much more flexible than trying to wrestle out sensible translations with the user dictionary. Most of the features are designed to be useful to people that are already fluent in both Japanese and English and just want to simplify the process of translating large swaths of text in a business setting, it seems.
