You don't have to be ashamed.
Kanji has been seriously dumbed down in these tests -- how dissapointing. :<
Grammar I think may have been more of "understanding Japanese" than the new points.
Vocabulary had gaps? I did Core 6000 which was sufficient it seemed. There is a 2000 for N4~ as well.

Another N5 taker here. I was shocked to see barely any kanji on the test as well. I think there was like, three or four kanji questions? I know I got one wrong but that was a kanji I didn't know, and it was tricky. I realized I had screwed up once the listening portion started, 「となり」ではない、「あいだ」です。But the vocabulary was a breeze.
I know I barely made it through the grammar section mainly because I was totally tested on material I did not prep for. I was taking past JLPT 4級 tests and only prepping on the questions I kept getting wrong - but for the real thing, none of those grammar questions I studied for was on the test. I think I had a freak out moment. The sentence construction wasn't that hard, except for the last question -- It just was not flowing naturally for me at all. The kids are going to the park tomorrow to practice bike riding but... it was just so awkward to construct!
The reading comprehension questions were really easy. I just trained myself to read it fast and read the key points of the sentence that needed to be answered. The fill in the blanks for that letter between the italian and the japanese girls was a bit tricky.
Listening was extremely easy. Like... Unbelievably easy. I couldn't believe how easy it was.
I'm totally banking on the vocabulary to carry my grammar section so I can pass... but I hope I didn't completely blow the grammar. I foresee 5 - 10 wrong on the grammar out of 32. I probably should have taken the N4 like my friends said because of how easy the test was overall... I also should have not spontaneously decide to take the test at the last minute and try to prep for it in two and a half months.

Well, if it is of any consolation, many Japanese who took TOEIC usually think that time is simply not enough to be able to read and comprehend long passages in English.

I didn't get any answer to my previous question so I infer it's safe to dump the questions of the test in topic
Most of the time I put only the answer found in the chinese corrections I found . I agree with them most of the time and also checked with internet and/or my dictionnary . In case I express some doubt about the chinese correction I give my alternative answer . In most case I don't give explanation as most of my answers are only context based .

@ghinzdra -- Yeah, your answers seem to match up with what I've found too. Some of the answers in the chinese ones were different in different versions... But seems to be pretty much the same across. It's really the reading I'm worried about, to be honest. Problem is I can't find that part anywhere.
It's gonna be pretty ぎりぎり for me, because I don't think the reading went as well as the other sections.

Reading for some reason is always the last part to hit internet.... Maybe it's because they want to OCR the text and for obvious reason it takes longer than voc/gram or even reading . Maybe because it s the part that has always been deciding wether you pass or not and they want to keep the suspense (even before the N1 : Reading/grammar was worth close to 200 points out of 400 . Each answer was worth a little more than 4 points - compared to about 1 point for basic kanji reading or 2 point for hearing !!! Considering you needed 280 points to pass it was the only part you couldn't afford to fail . )
If people are interested , I also have reading script and made my own correction , only confirming my feelings during the test (and by that I mean not only the good answers but also the part were you lose focus for a couple of seconds , missing the important part and you answer something knowing it's gonna be wrong )
