Japan is one of the first countries to have the test (timewise) - apart from Australia and some other Asian countries, of course.
Most European countries will have the test 8-9 hours LATER than Japan, for example.
Basically it's possible that the people who already took the test tell the people in other countries about the contents of the test before they actually take it. Right?
Isn't that a little bit unfair? ;P

Another newb question: the rules on my exam ticket seem pretty strict about what to bring and what not to bring, but there isn't a comment about whether bringing a backpack is OK (assuming you can put it somewhere). I've got a bit of a trek to my test center, so I'm assuming it's alright to have a bag with other things in it which I can leave in a corner in the room or whatever... Any former JLPT test takers have experience with this?

For the last few years scans of the test have been on the usual Chinese forums within a few hours of the test time in China, giving an advantage to dishonest western students.

So i finally got around to doing the July test... I didn't bother scoring it properly, just calculated raw percentages. My miss rate was pretty consistent across different mark questions so it probably doesn't matter much.
Language Knowledge: 80%
Reading: 73%
Listening: 72% (real shocker as i was unsure of virtually all my answers)
Overall: 75%
I'm pretty happy with that... It's a pass by enough of a margin that hopefully its still a pass after all the bell curving etc. And none of the sections are remotely close to the sectional fail points (fairly even actually). Now, i just have to repeat that performance tomorrow (including my startlingly accurate guesswork in the listening...)

Is my understanding right in that they determine the passing rate (of the N4) after the tests have been taken and a bell curve of sorts has been established?
Also, is passing the N4 based on a cumulative score or do you have to pass each section?
Im taking it tomorrow and Im getting nervous over the listening section

Any variation in mean test scores is the fault of a glut of talented or stupid test takers, not a failure on the test makers' part to consistently make tests with exactly the same difficulty every year.

@JimmySeal -- Yes, it was. Hence the "So, uh.. *cough*" bit, and the "tracking down" of "devious thieves." I guess it didn't come out as good in text as it sounded in my head.

Just got to my hotel in Alexandria, just outside of Washington. I had to drive through a freak snowstorm in North Carolina to get here. Totally nuts.
Now I just have to figure out a way to relax and get into a 日本語 studying mindset. I'm all frazzled from traveling and just all-around nervous.
I even had a Fun Moment where I thought I had left my exam ticket at home. I didn't, but for 5 minutes, papers were flying when the envelope didn't show up in its expected place.
I guess I'll go hit the cramzen master a little, then do a practice test, then some listening drills or something, then sack out with some Benadryl.
